It's hard to find any one song to define an era. Especially the 1960's. Growing up then there was just too much going on. Very rapid change was taking effect. For an era that was all about the anti-establishment youth movement that was suppose to have been characterized by peace and love - it was quite violent. And I think that sparked the musical creativity we saw. It was an outlet.

We saw the lovable Beatles go from singing I Want To Hold Your Hand to protest songs like Revolution.....

So I think protest songs really characterized the 60's.

That all gave way to the 70's.... which I thought was a drag and huge letdown creativity-wise when compared to the 60's. Not saying there wasn't some great music coming out then; but not at the level of the previous decade. You had performers like Boddy Sherman, Osmonds, Three Dog Night, Tony Orlando, and John Denver topping the charts.

There was quite a difference.

I guess peace really stifles the creative outlets. ;)

60's music was more socially conscious. We were gonna change the world that our parents were screwing up. Someone had to save it.

The 70's was the time for the arena bands with their huge productions. I saw a majority of the bands you list above, plus several more. It was definitely "good time" music because most had a hard time remembering those concerts the next day, and it took you a week to get your hearing back. :D

And I would add Grand Funk, Deep Purple, Styx, Foreigner, Kansas, and Ted Nugent to the above list.

GOOD TIMES!!! I miss those concerts. Last one I went to was Van Halen's reunion tour last year, made me miss the good ole days of rock music!
