A blip from USA today:
Patton, 24, and Johnston, 24, both played at high Class A Modesto this year. Patton has a power arm and had 87 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings, while Johnston, who had 24 saves, is a strike-thrower with a good sinker. Neither would appear to be ready to pitch in the big leagues next season.
He sure is old for A+, but seemed to miss a lot of bats last season.

C Trent is reporting that the Reds will trade Patton to the Cubs.

That means we get someone we can keep without restrictions.

I was really hoping the Reds would give Matt Miller of the Rockies a chance. The Reds need the outfield depth, so I thought it would be a good target.

Unless he was traded for cash like Hamilton was.

For those wonder, the Reds paid $100,000 to the Cubs, who paid $50,000 to the Rays.
As for Patton, the Reds must pay $50,000 to the Rockies, so if he's traded to the Cubs for cash, it's for at least $50,000.

Rather take a flyer on someone than get $100,000

I'd rather spend that $50,000 on five waiver claims, which cost $10,000 each, iIrc, and the quality of players are usually much better. I like the idea of taking fliers on players, but I think there are better uses for 40-man roster spots.
