Reds Reach Agreement With Rhodes By Tim Dierkes [December 11 at 11:23am CST]
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Reds have reached a preliminary agreement with lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes on a two-year, $4MM deal. It's pending a physical.

Love the move. $2 million per is a steal compared to what some of the other lefty relievers were asking, and he proved last year he's still got it. To me, that rounds out the bullpen:

RHP Jared Burton
RHP Mike Lincoln
RHP David Weathers
RHP Micah Owings (Or Nick Masset if he becomes a starter)
LHP Bill Bray
LHP Arthur Rhodes
Closer Francisco Cordero

I think this is a solid pickup, that bullpen is really looking nice, i just wish weathers wouldn't have accepted arbitration. He's a guy in my opinion that has way better stats than what he actually pitches.

at this point you have Cordero, Burton, Rhodes, and Lincoln, I think thats a pretty solid 4.

Now we just need to go get that right handed middle of the order bat, and it should be a fun season!

I like this move. Losing Affeldt not a big deal at all, now. Rhodes put better numbers and is cheaper. Even though he's older, he certainly showed no signs of slowing down last year.

I approve this signing

Updated payroll space:

According to Fay yesterday, Cincinnati had about $16 million left to spend. Rhodes brings that down to $14 million with the glaring hole being left field. Now does Jock go for Dye's $11.5 million contract knowing he got a bargain lefty reliever?

No doubt a great signing by Walt. Shoring up the bullpen!

My recap and thoughts on the Diamond-Studded Arthur is now up on www.straitpinkie.com/sports/reds/reds-continue-to-address-needs/ , Now on to DYE!!!!!

Would rather see 1 year but 2 isn't the end of the world. Nice pick up imo.

12-11-2008, 01:13 PM
If we offered him a 1 year deal, he wouldn't be here.

12-11-2008, 01:16 PM
^ I know that, just saying I would rather see one year. I probably should have made that more clear.

12-11-2008, 01:31 PM
we always get the older guys, but i still don't mind it i guess.

The reds got their Loogy, for relatively cheap too. Now they need a SS and a LF and they still have the majority of their "cap" space left. Good move. Not crazy about a second year, but overall good move.

Not thrilled about a 2 year deal for a 39 year old pitcher but I've seen this organization pick up a lot worse pitchers than Rhodes

Agree 100%.

The only thing that made us more appealing was a 2 year deal. Great move for a team like our reds.

He still has "it". At worst he will sit in the middle relief/mopup duty next year, can close in a pinch or if Coco needs a day off.

12-11-2008, 04:19 PM
Mr. Jocketty has been making some nice moves this off season IMO

12-11-2008, 04:19 PM
His stats against lefties are downright sick.

.221 .289 .325 .614

.216 .314 .270 .584

As long as he is a just a loogy, a smart pick up.

The Reds now have great depth in the bullpen, which is a necessity to compete. Beside Cordero, they have five veterans in Burton, Bray, Lincoln, Weathers and Rhodes, and four solid young arms in Roenicke, Herrara, Masset and Fisher.
Not to mention the losers of the 5th spot in the rotation. Most teams use around 8-10 relievers in a season, so this means less chance to use Majewski.

12-11-2008, 04:22 PM
Use him wisely, and I like it. :)

12-11-2008, 04:31 PM
Nice pickup I was worried about losing Affeldt but I'm ok now.

12-11-2008, 05:18 PM
IMO that second year might not be that big of a deal. If the Reds are out of it by the deadline and Rhodes is having a pretty good year, he might be able to net us an ok prospect from a contender because he won't be just a half year rental.

If the Reds are a contender, I think this guy can be a key addition to the pen, and really help shut down the lefties in the division.

12-11-2008, 05:31 PM
And if he stinks and would be blocking the progress of a prospect in 2010, BCast has shown the mettle to eat $2 mill in salary.

Agreed, second year for this contract isn't as bad as once thought.

Good move Walt, throws the innings that his teams need.

I like this pickup, especially at 2 mil a year. I remember him being pretty good when he was on Walt's Cards. I thought maybe his age had gotten the better of him, but his 08 season proved me wrong.

12-12-2008, 12:02 AM
He never pitched for the Cardinals

12-12-2008, 04:39 PM
Any word on Rhode's physical yet?

Just passed per Fay's blog. TBA at 5:30 and will be at Redsfest.

http://whitecoatrants.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/embarrassed-chimpanzee.jpgThanks for the correction, Wildcat. Had him mixed up with Ray King (another lefty with a gut to match his fastball). My bad.

12-13-2008, 12:33 AM
Oh man, Ray King. I used to love to see him come to the mound when he was in St. Louis. He was a guaranteed rally.

I think it is great that the Reds picked up Arthur Rhodes. The Reds have had some serious problems with their bullpen for several years. It does not matter how old he is now. He had an excellent year last year. And he has proved himself over the years. To get Rhodes after the kind of year he had last year is fantastic! And only have to pay him 2 million a year is a big steal for the Reds. This was definitely a great move!
