Decisions at hand as deadline looms
Arbitration-eligible players face midnight ET cutoff on Friday

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- Another deadline looms in Major League Baseball that has ramifications for the Reds players.

The deadline to tender 2009 contracts to arbitration-eligible players is midnight ET on Friday. The Reds have three players that fall into this category in third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and pitchers Matt Belisle and Gary Majewski.

Players not offered contracts will become free agents.

Of the three Reds, only Encarnacion is assured of receiving an offer. In 146 games last season, he batted .251 with a career-high 26 home runs and 68 RBIs.

Belisle avoided arbitration last year with a one-year, $1 million deal but only had six big league starts in 2008 and was 1-4 with a 7.28 ERA. He was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on May 29 and went 5-1 with a 4.26 ERA in 26 relief appearances. On Aug. 19, he had season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.

Majewski was 1-0 with a 6.53 ERA in 37 games with the Reds and 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA in 22 games for Louisville last season. The right-hander has often struggled for Cincinnati since he was acquired in a July 2006 eight-player trade from the Nationals.

Let's hope this is finally the end of Gary Majewski in Cincinnati.

I think I'm more interested to see who is non-tendered elsewhere, nut I would be surprised if Belisle or Majewski are still Reds after tomorrow's deadline.
