By Tim Dierkes [December 12 at 6:09pm CST]

Here is a list of players who were non-tendered today, and therefore became free agents.

* Chris Britton and Justin Christian
* Tim Redding
* C. Trent Rosecrans e-mails that the Reds will not tender contracts to Matt Belisle or Gary Majewski.
* Chris Capuano
* Kevin Cash
* Chuck James
* Chris Burke

Not surprised about Majewski, but I still thought that Belisle had a little bit of upside considering he had a 4.32 xFIP in 2007 when he threw 177 innings.

Unlucky hardly means good in terms of Belisle.

I understand the move on Belisle. A little disappointed, I always liked him, always pulled for him. But it was time to cut bait with him. Majewski goes without saying.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Reds take a shot at Capuano. I realize he's rehabbing from surgery, but he could be a decent 5th starter, and a lefty at that.

The Dodgers Non-Tendered:Takashi Saito, Scott Proctor, Yhency Brazoban, Angel Berroa and Mario Alvarez

Couple interesting names on that list as well

Saito and Capuano anyone?

Saito? Seriously? I know he's injured, but I thought he would be too valuable to let go. We have a good (and very expensive) closer, and the rest of our bullpen seems to be set, but if the price is right, we could do what the Dodgers (Danys Baez), Yankees (Tom Gordon), Mets (J.J. Putz) and others have done in recent years, and pick up an established closer as our marquee setup guy. Granted, Baez didn't exactly work out, but you can never have too many good releivers (perhaps he can fill the gaping hole left by the Magic Man;))

That "Saito? Seriously?" comment was in reply to wojo, just to clarify

I don't want to ever see either one of those guys pitch for the Reds again....

Ty Wigginton was non-tendered. He could be very valuable to Cincy. In this park I could see him hitting .280 with 25-30 HR's and having a .350 OBP. He's not the 4 spot hitter Cincy needs, but he could be a good piece if he's willing to come in cheap. Also, if EE is on the block he would be a 1 or 2 year stop gap until one of the Reds 3rd base prospects is ready.

Norris Hopper was also non-tendered.

Oooh, Chris Burke was non-tendered. I think I'd be too biased to say that I'd like to see the Reds get him. :)

Norris Hopper was also non-tendered.

The ORG is claiming that the Reds have a deal with him, probably sign him to a minor league contract. Done all the time with guys coming off injuries.

But this means that the Reds have only two outfielders on the 40 man roster, Bruce and Dickerson.

even so, don't the rules state that ya gotta have at least three outfielders? i can see the reds signing hopper to a minor league deal which would leave him off the roster. that, in turn, would leave me to believe that jocketty has another deal in the works for another outfielder. maybe hairston or rivera? hopefully both...

Is the shortstop on the list worth looking at? Angel Berroa? does anyone know anything about him.

I say trade EE while he still has trade value. As another poster said, sign someone who can give us a couple years at 3rd until the kids are ready. I would love to see us sign a number 3 or 4 quality starter and a left fielder.

Norris Hopper has resigned with the Reds.

IF you count Hopper we'd have 3 outfielders and 5 catchers on the 40 man. Kinda crazy how this team likes catchers so much.

does anyone know anything about him.

Berroa won the 2003 AL ROY when he hit .287 with 17 home runs, 73 RBI, 21 stolen bases and a .789 ops. But just like the Heisman the ROY isn't exactly the greatest indicator of future success. After 2003 his stats proceeded to fall off a cliff. ...

Following his rookie year, Berroa's performance went down annually in on-base percentage, runs, slugging percentage, and stolen bases. His fielding statistics included 77 errors from 2003–2005 (24, 28 — leading all Major League shortstops while he had the lowest fielding percentage among shortstops — .955, 25) that were the most among starting American League shortstops in that time span. Berroa has also produced declining walk totals in the years after his Rookie of the Year award. Berroa walked once very 21 plate appearances in 2003, but had fallen to a 36-to-1 PA/BB ratio in 2005. In both 2005 and 2006, he walked only 2.9% of the time, the second-worst and then the worst percentage in Major League Baseball.

He'll probably be picked up by someone on a minor league contract for positional depth but at this point expectations are pretty low for him and, without any kind of improvement, he could be out of baseball soon.

Japanese Free Agent Round-Up: Kawakami, Takahashi, Saito
By Alex Walsh [December 13 at 3:36pm CST]
.... Takashi Saito turned down a 1-year, $2MM offer to become non-tendered.

And then there were two. Looks like Bray and Thompson are the remains of what was to be the blockbuster trade to get the Reds into the postseason.

Thompson and Bray > 5th outfielder the other guys have.

Although I wouldn't mind having that 5th outfielder back right now. Man I LOVED me some Austin Kearns.

Cuz he's a hometown product and had such a promising start to his career before he was traded. Nothing but fond memories of the guy. I think he would do well with a return to the Reds. Besides, his only bad year was this last one. All the other ones were average or above average or the injury-plagued 2004.
