That was obviously a huge turning point in the game, but contrary to what many (not saying you, Matt) will have you believe, it wasn't on the last, fateful and deciding 49ers drive.

Seeing footage of that game still makes me sick at my stomach, even twenty years later. I will contend the rest of my days that the Cincinnati Bengals were the best team in the National Football League in 1988.

Didn't the niners get a TD on the next play?

I'm not sure the last drive matters as much if they are down by an additional 7 points :)

Yes, it was definitely a big play in the game, as I originally mentioned - all I'm saying is that many incorrectly recall it being on the final drive of the game (right before Montana to Taylor).

(1) SF 15 110 Montana 31 pass to Rice left (Wilcots).
END OF THIRD QUARTER:
Cincinnati 13, San Francisco 6
FOURTH QUARTER
(2) SF 46 110 Montana 40 pass to Craig deep right (Billups).
(3) C 14 110 Montana pass to Taylor almost intercepted (Billups), incomplete.
(4) C 14 210 Montana 14 pass to Rice left, touchdown (14:03). Cofer kicked extra point.
San Francisco scoring drive: 85 yards, 4 plays, 1:31.

As much as I like to think I recall Bengals and Reds history precisely, I was among those who thought that until you pointed out otherwise today. :redface:

Ahh. I always remembered it as a play that happened on an earlier drive; I probably haven't ever noticed that people had Fisked it.
