LOS ANGELES (AP) -Longtime big league shortstop Juan Castro agreed Tuesday to a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If Castro is added to the 40-man roster, he would receive a one-year deal worth $700,000 while in the majors and $81,000 while in the minors.
The deal also calls for Castro to receive $25,000 each for 300, 350 and 400 plate appearances, and $50,000 each for 450 and 500 plate appearances.
The 36-year-old Castro signed with the Dodgers in 1991 and began his major league career with them four years later. He has a .228 batting average in 984 career games with the Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles.
Castro appeared in a combined 61 games with the Reds and Orioles last season, hitting .193 with two homers and 16 RBIs, when he split time as Baltimore's starting shortstop with Alex Cintron.

Is the AP getting their news by Pony Express again? This reported about four weeks ago.

I thought the same thing. The AP is constantly behind when it comes to the smaller transactions. They were still listing Corey Patterson as a FA a couple days ago.

What kind of world are you living in where Juan Castro is considered a smaller transaction? :D

I would have thought the Rangers would have picked him up to pinch-hit for Josh late in the game. ;)

Because you need a small brain to make that transaction.

Well now that he's no longer a free agent we can finally trade for him.

I can't imagine why the Dodgers of all teams would want Juan Castro? They have 3 SS's all better than him at AAA and above. Furcal, Hu and DeJesus. Lord what could we trade to get DeJesus this kid is exactly what we need. I'd even offer them something for Hu at this point if they wanted to keep DeJesus.

It might have been more of a matter of Castro wanting to go to the Dodgers. It was where he started his career, and Spanish is his mother languages, so maybe it's the most comfortable place for him.
