Jennifer Hudson lip-synched

Hudson turned in a powerful performance of the national anthem at Super Bowl XLIII. Initial reviews were good. And then reports surfaced that Hudson had lip-synched.

Who could blame her? It was, after all, her first public appearance since her mother, brother and nephew were slain. Which raises a question: Why did Faith Hill, who followed Hudson on stage, lip-synch her rendition of "America the Beautiful"?

Before we rush to judge these divas, previous Super Bowl national anthem singers have done the same. Turns out, the NFL requires that the prerecorded tracks be submitted one week prior to the event, to hedge against technical difficulties during the live broadcast.

(It's a policy the San Diego Padres could have used when Roseanne Barr took the mic in 1990. Remember that?)

Some assisted "Star Spangled Banners" have been more successful than others. Take a listen and decide for yourself.

It's almost expected these days.

It's safe for the artist and the record company. The last thing the label wants is to invest millions of dollars into an artist and have them sing a very difficult song in a very difficult environment in front of a HUGE television audience and end up blowing it.
