redsfandan, I sent a new offer through email.

A modest proposal to limit the trading of draft picks: could we require that all trades must be completed and posted BEFORE that draft pick is 'on the clock'? In other words, once you are on the clock with a given draft pick, you can no longer trade that pick.

This draft is slow enough without adding time to the progression of the draft while we all wait to see whether the current pick is traded off or not. I am already generally concerned that trading picks slows things up due to confusion about whose turn it is.

We are a little more than half way through the 10th round of this draft. We started on February 19th. Today is the 9th of March. It has taken 18 days to get this far, almost two days per round. At the current rate, we will finish around 35 days from now(around April 14th), since we will draft 18 more positions counting the reserves. The only problem is that the regular season starts on April 5th.

Good idea. Well said.

As of the next pick you can't trade the pick that is "on the clock". I will enact that rule change as commissioner -- I don't think we need to vote on that one.

It is late enough in the draft that I don't see any real motivation to trade draft picks at this point anyway. It is much too late to trade up for a stud player now -- those guys are gone.

Upon the completion of every round I will post a draft summary and the schedule for the next two rounds. This way everyone can see who is next in the draft to eliminate confusion.

I want to keep the draft moving as quickly as possible, but I also want to make sure you are treated fairly.

Maybe we could put a policy in effect where we would select on your behalf the highest ranked player available once you have been on the clock for 2 hours? I could add the player with the best Yahoo O-Rank (hitter or pitcher) to your team at the three-hour mark. How would that work?

And/or maybe we could have you switch draft slots with Nate (if he agrees). This way you would only have half as many turns, but you would make two picks each time like Nate does now. This would cut in half the number of delays caused by your busy work schedule.

Or you could send me a list of pre-ranked players so I could add the top available player from your list whenever your turn comes up.

Let me know your thoughts.

Guys, just so we understand the excuse hierarchy:

*Pre-excuse
Typically made before the match to lessen the agony of defeat or heighten the thrill of victory. Examples:

"My internet has been lagging all night so I'm not sure I should get sniper."

"I thought I was picking the _other_ Mike Stanton!"

"I have WMR on my team."

*Post-excuse
If you didn't preface your dismal performance with a caveat, you can always make the best of it with a post-excuse. Examples:

"Willy Tavares hit .300 one year!"

"This controller was setup with look inverted!"

"I had WMR on my team."

Very, very clever AD. So you dealt one of the extra picks from your last "deal" to move up 2 picks a total of either 4+ rounds OR 12 rounds. (depending on how you look at it)

As far as the pace of the draft, I'm kinda afraid I opened up a Pandoras Box with my suggestion to allow pick trading:

Welcome back. The pace of the draft has been very slow over the weekend. Hopefully it will speed up on Monday. I am thinking about going to 6 hours per pick starting with round 16, and then 4 hours per pick at round 20. If you get bypassed occasionally it won't matter much in the late rounds.

Now I want to get this done in time too but are ya sure that making it 6 or even 4 hours will help enough? Starting with pick 14.1 we went from 12 hours to 8 hours per pick and the 14th round still took a little more than 2 days. The draft started on 2/19 with the 12 hour time limit started on 2/23. In almost 4 weeks we're almost halfway done with only 2 1/2 weeks to finish.

On March 1, we were at pick 5.5. In the first 16 days of the month (3/1-3/16) we've knocked out 123 picks or a little more than 10 rounds. At this rate the last few rounds won't be done in time. Even if the pace picks up it'll still be iffy to finish those rounds.

I know it may not be a popular option but can we at least entertain the idea of seeing if
everyone can be on the site at the same time the weekend before the season starts to knock out whatever rounds are left at that point? It may not be easy to find a time to fit everyone but we'll probably ONLY need ONE hour if everyone takes no more than a minute per pick. Thoughts? Anyone? Maybe consider this as an option if the pace doesn't pick up enough the rest of this week?

Maybe it's just me but I think the focus NEEDS to be on finishing the draft BEFORE the season starts.

1) I did protest your deal with reds77 via pm.
2) Unfortunately any votes would just hold up the draft even more.
3)....

Maybe it's just me but I think the focus NEEDS to be on finishing the draft BEFORE the season starts.

If we add a live draft to knock out the last few rounds we need to find out when everyone can be online at the same time to do it and the sooner the better.

reds77

So why was the trade I made protested? Who did you think was getting the better deal? I'm personally quite content that I got two studs in exchange for lesser ranked players.

mbgrayson
03-17-2009, 07:34 PM
The problem with draft pick trading is that it gets unmanageable, slows the draft, and is not voted on by the league. If actual players gets traded, the league can block the trade if it is deemed one sided.

I would be ok with setting up a time for drafting the last weekend. AD' s plan to shorten allowed times would also work to speed things up. The real slow down comes when certain people let there pick languish the maximum time. It would be interesting to add up total time on the clock. A couple players would likely account for half the time. ;)

But all that said, to me it is not that big a deal. My guys will be ready to play even if we are still drafting the last few slots! My team is ready to ROCK.

So why was the trade I made protested? Who did you think was getting the better deal? I'm personally quite content that I got two studs in exchange for lesser ranked players.

To set the record straight, the trade was NOT protested. The person (not you reds77) that made that claim had me so upset I had to wait several hours to calm down before I could reply. I took great offense at the accusation. This is supposed to be fun so I will forget about the insult. I have made every effort to keep this league fair and square for everyone and will continue to do so.

We had one other trade that was protested by one of the participants after the trade was finalized. The other party graciously agreed to re-work the deal even though it was agreed to by both parties before being finalized.

Mike

The pick trading has turned out to be a bit of a hassle. We won't have to worry about it next year since the draft will only be about 3-4 rounds long. I don't think the trades have slowed down the draft. That is caused by people's busy schedules and sporadic attention.

The point of putting a trade up for vote is to prevent collusion, not to prevent somebody from making an ill-advised trade. The goal is to prevent cheating, not to prevent people from improving their teams.

I have seen leagues get derailed by people vetoing every trade to prevent their opponents from improving their teams.

We may have to go with a live draft for the final few rounds. Or we could reduce the time limit to one hour for the last week.

I don't see any huge reason why we have to finish every last round before Opening Day anyway. It is not like those 28th-round players are going to be in your starting lineup. I am open to ideas from you guys. What do you want to do?

Yep, I know what you mean. I can speak from experience as commissioner of another league that explaining this is very annoying--especially in a money league where it is expected that everyone knows what is going on. The above is a great description and I might just have to use it again... :)

Ya know, after looking over Reynolds stats from last year, and the stats we are using in this league, getting him in the 16th round is a steal. the only place he MIGHT hurt me is BA. if you limit PA's to 450, he's a top 5 3B in every category except BA (21st) and RBI (7th)

I'm feeling pretty good about the pick, better if he can get his BA back to his 2007 season.

I've got Reynolds down for .244/78/26/92/8. PECOTA has him at .260/79/29/84/9. That is a big spread in BA. He's a slightly below-average player compared overall based on the PECOTA projection. But with my BA he's not worth much. Basically, it all depends on how comfortable you are with his BA; if he can keep it up around .260 he will be pretty good...

Fwiw, I feel I should make some type of statement regarding yesterday. I chalk up yesterday as a regrettable, BIG misunderstanding. (More than one actually) One of which I want to try to clear up.

At NO time was I suggesting that Atomic Dumpling did anything improper. Since it appears that Atomic Dumpling (and others) may have had that impression and that Atomic Dumpling felt insulted I offer my sincere apology to him for not wording my previous post better but it was NOT my intention to insult his character or integrity. Again, Imo, this is mostly a misunderstanding.

I hope that people can understand that at this time I feel it may be better for me to not comment anymore about what happened yesterday until at least some time has passed and it's not quite so "fresh". I also hope that this will not affect anything that happens this year. If it does I'll leave it up to the commish and the rest of the league to decide how to proceed.

By the way, judging from some of the posts, I'm afraid that a few people maybe making assumptions based on only a couple posts on an anonymous internet message board. As some of you may already know, it can be easier for misunderstandings to happen when you're dealing with the internet. And like I've said, Imo, yesterday was a regrettable, BIG misunderstanding. One that I would like to be left to Atomic Dumpling and myself to discuss sometime in the future.

I think it was a good selection. He is very good in runs, HRs and RBIs. He hurts in BA, but you can compensate for that with some other players. He is a quality player -- but not perfect. But how many perfect players are available in the 16th round?

I think he was waaay overlooked, especially given the stats we are using. in 4 of the 5 offensive categories he was a top 10 player finishing no lower than 7th. It all comes down to his BA, which I think will rebound to at least a .280 mark.

Mark Reynolds also set the all time mark for strike outs(204) in one year in 2008(Dunner is now in third behind Reynolds and Ryan Howard). He walked 64 times. With that low of a contact rate, his batting average will not go up too much. He struck out 37.8% of the time in 2008. His BABIP was .329 last year, which is generally considered on the 'lucky' side. He is Adam Dunn lite....that is why I passed on him.

But you are right that everyone in the 16th round has warts, and his are no worse than others, and he is young with upside.

What if we were to just pick one night, get on the Redszone chat, and finish this thing off?

We may have to do that. I hope not. The reason we had a slow draft is so we would have more control over our teams. Those one-hour speed drafts are for newbies and casual players. If you want to take your draft and your team seriously you need more than a minute to make a decision.

So I am hoping we can get to at least round 24 before Opening Day.

It would be great if everybody can commit to:

1. Check the board more frequently from now until Opening Day.

2. Make your choices quickly when it is your turn.

3. Email the next manager.

Regarding Rick Porcello:

Back when we started the draft (seems like forever ago now) I published a list of rules on the league website and in the Redszone discussion thread (post #23 in this thread). Rule #3 on that list stated that players added to the player pool after the draft began would not be eligible to be drafted.

The reason we had the rule is to make sure that everyone has an equal shot at all the players. Last year we had the problem that some highly desirable players (like Edinson Volquez and Evan Longoria) were added to Yahoo in the middle of the draft, which meant that the owner whose turn was up would suddenly have a chance to take a top-notch player that previous owners could not.

It didn't happen much this year because Yahoo started with all the rookies, prospects and injured players in the FA pool from the very beginning. Last year the player pool was much smaller at the beginning and they added dozens of players during March.

This year Rick Porcello was really the only good player affected by the rule.

After the draft I will put Rick Porcello on waivers. That will give everyone a fair shot at him if you want him.

I will send Rick Porcello to waivers. I can't find a way to do this with the commissioner tools provided by Yahoo. Does anyone know how this can be done?

I might have to add him to my team for a day, then drop him to the waiver list. So if you see me add Porcello to my team I am not trying to snag him illegally.

So now that the draft is over, how do you feel about your team? Do you feel like you will compete for the championship? Or does your team need some work?

Who do you think has the strongest team?

Through like 10 rounds I really liked my team. Then I lost focus a little bit and began to worry. I like my final roster because I have a good mix of ready-to-win talent with young guys like Cahill, Anderson, and Wallace. I think I can compete for the championship but it is going to require some more moves because my team is a little imbalanced. I was much more worried about my team until I looked at the other rosters .

As for other rosters--Atomic Dumpling has a great offense and a ridiculous amount of closers (6!) but I'm worried about him having any SP depth after Santana and Sabathia (!). Of course, that is two more SP than camisadelgolf has . I like mbgrayson's offense too but he is short on pitching all around. Like camisadelgolf, redsfandan has a young team with a bright future. Speaking of upside, TRF's team is either gonna be awesome or be selling by late May . Nate has one of the best teams if he can mine some closers. WMR has a lacking offense but a great pitching staff also in need of saves (where are all of the closers? Oh yeah, on AD's team ;)). reds77 and gilpdawg have a solid teams. CRF2000 has talent but he needs to transfer some offense for arms and AD's closers.

That's my take. Sorry if I was brutally honest. Take it for what it's worth... :)

I am happy with my team. I think I will be strong in every category, but SB will be my weakest stat. My team has depth and a good balance. I have a good mix of youth and proven value. Of course I always think my teams are good after the draft, but sometimes I am delusional.

The league should be very competitive this year. There are several very strong teams. I was surprised by a couple teams after looking at their rosters because I hadn't noticed during the draft how many good players they were accumulating. Reds77 and gilpdawg fall into that category.

I was expecting BaseCloggers and mbgrayson to put together solid teams and they did. We played together last year so I already knew they are good managers. BaseClogger has a proven cast of hitters and nice balance of SPs and closers. Definitely a threat to win. Mbgrayson also has good balance on offense and will probably win the steals stat. His pitching is solid but could use another closer.

No dud teams in this league. So you better bring your A game if you want to come in 2nd place. 1st place is already locked up for me.

Redsfandan has a very strong track record. He put together a very young team full of uber-prospects.

stephenk29 has an excellent offense and some good closers. He may need to finagle his starting pitching due to injuries.

TRF has an unorthodox team to my eye. He has excellent pitching. He grabbed a mix of vets and high-upside youngsters on offense. SBs a problem?

CRF2000 has a very nice offense across the board. His starting pitching is solid but he lacks relievers.

WMR has 10 starting pitchers, some of whom are excellent young prospects. His relievers are sparse. His offense is eclectic and good. It will be interesting to see how his team plays out.

Camisadelgolf has a rocking offense and 3 stud closers, but only one major league starting pitcher. He needs to swing deals with gilpdawg (9 SPs) and WMR (10 SPs) to obtain some starters.

Nate has solid team all around. His offense will rake. He needs saves and maybe steals.

No dud teams in this league. You better bring your A game if you want to come in 2nd. (1st place has already been locked up for me.)

I've never really played in a baseball league I took seriously, so I'm hoping you guys don't make a fool of me. I've been playing fantasy football since I was 14 or so, and I'm 31 now, but I've never really done baseball. I didn't realize it, but I drafted too many OFs, and I have NO depth at the IF positions. :)

I have a real hard time evaluating the teams until about two months into the season. I mean, when you get to pick from all the players in the game, ALL the teams look good. I will say that BC and AD hit upon the two things I know I'm missing: saves and SB. I almost took Willy T early on just to help myself out here. Saves, it seemed like Billy Wagner was ALWAYS up there but is he ever going to pitch again? Dunno. So, I just tried to pick up some "stems and seeds" dudes.

Also, I think one can play the waiver wire shuffle throughout the year (which, to me, is part of the fun) to cobble together some of these areas where you're short. I tried to get position versatility so I always have the option to sub in a "hot hand."

I always undervalue SB's. dunno why, I just turn a blind eye. I really focused on high upside and somewhat risky players. I think it could be a fun team.

I will say I think I have the best pitching. Excellent starters four good relievers. At C I have a sleeper in Baker and Navarro who is looking to build on an All Star performance. I like that I chose so many players with multiple position eligibility. I picked up Kearns on waivers as I believe he is playing for his baseball life, he's healthy and he won the starting RF job. Also just added Nick Johnson.

My team is fraught with high upside risk players. :)

I love it.

I do have three Nats though.

Stephenk29 could lead the league in SB's

Gilpdawg has a nice mix of power and speed. looks to be short on saves.

CRF2000 has a ton of position players and is short on saves as well. Getting Drew late has some upside.

redfandan has a great team top to bottom. kudos sir.

WMR should go ahead and concede the season :D I mean crown him as champion.

camisadelgolf has a good offense, solid to great relievers but weak SP IMO.

I am soooo going to crush you guys.

I wouldn't really say my SP is weak. I'd describe it more as 'non-existent'. I'm not concerned, but I'm definitely open to trades.

To manage my draft, I use a piece of software called RotoLab. It links with Ron Shandler's baseball Forcaster and uses those projections for each player to project overall how everyone is going to do in each stat category. As the draft progressed, i entered each choice into the software, although i may have missed a few picks since my last draft pick. The projections also depend on who is played in the slots that count on each roster, and no credit is given for bench players.

Here are the category leaders as projected by Rotolab:

Wins: nate
Saves: Camis
StrikeOuts: Gilpdawg
Era: TRF
WHIP: Atomic Dumpling
Runs: mbgrayson
HRs: mbgrayson
RBIs: stephenk
Steals: mbgrayson
Avg.: redsfandan

This software has me leading overall, but then it should, since I often followed the 'advice' of this software in drafting.(It rates Baseclogger second...) And as we all know, none of the projection systems are all that accurate, no better than about 70% at best. I also used PECOTA from Baseball Prospectus, Bill James Handbook projections, Sporting News, and the Rotowire draft guide. I generally looked for younger players since this is a dynasty league. I then compiled these five rating systems into a spreasheet of players I was interested in, and looked for players that were highly rated in multiple systems, with heavier emphasis on Shandler and Baseball Prospectus ratings. Later in the draft, I looked at spring training numbers, and especially injury reports, to make some decisions. I also used the Baseball America 2009 Prospect Guide and John Sickels 2009 Prospect Book to rank prospects.

I have tried drafting by the seat of my pants before, and I tend to do better with a more systematic (and obsessive) approach. But there are so many factors that come into play, like injuries. I already have Joe Mauer, Scott Baker, and Joey Devine on the DL, and only one DL slot available.

I do find that fantasy baseball makes me better enjoy baseball in general. I think I can name the closers on almost every team now, when before I couldn't have done that...

Ok, I spilled my secrets....what approach do you guys all use?

I make a spreadsheet for hitters, but not pitchers. I just project each hitter's numbers based on their career stats and how I feel about them. Then I come up with z scores including position scarcity and use that as a guide, but I still just sort of go by personal opinion...

edit: I find it interesting that I am projected to finish 2nd overall but not 1st in any individual category...

Wow. I am impressed with your diligence and effort. It will be very interesting to see if it pays off. I am going to win the league, but hopefully your system will earn you second place.

How much did all those resources cost you?

I did a lot of research on prospects and really learned a lot. I made a spreadsheet to graph out the rankings of all the various experts. Other than the top 10 or so prospects the experts were all over the map with their opinions. I didn't take too many prospects because I wanted to win this year while also having a solid foundation for future seasons. There is a new crop of prospects every year right? ;)

I was familiar enough with the established players to wing it somewhat. I take the best player available without worrying too much about positions until late in the draft.

I tried to concentrate on all 10 stats. I tend to draft teams without any stolen bases, so I made a concerted effort to take some guys that steal bases this time.

I am confident that my team will be pretty good at all ten stat categories. I may not win any of them, but I will be in double figures in nearly every category if my predictions are accurate.

I tend to mix and match players a lot rather than using the same lineup every day. That may confuse the Shandler program a bit. My team is also likely to look very different in September than it does in April. I like to make trades and swap out free agents.

Well, this is going to be a very fun season. I can't wait to see who rises to the top and wins the inaugural championship. Probably me. :D
