what ever happened to this kid? I know he finished in AAA last year. I know he was pretty highly touted, right? 2nd round overall. Big time right handed power and good speed the scouts say.

So when will he be in Cincinnati?

Szymanski retired during the offseason.

Why did he retire?

He wasn't hitting, plus he got a great job offer from what I heard.

Having an Ivy League education makes it a whole lot easier to cut your losses when the baseball thing doesn't work out.

Good to hear he had a great job offer, you had to figure that was the case w/ an Ivy league degree and the writing on the wall that he wasn't going to have much more than a Moon Light Graham career in the majors, if that, time to get on with your life's work.

Isn't it amazing that a second round draft pick who was highly regarded at the time amounted to no more then maybe a moonlight graham career at best if he stuck it out? The big league draft is such a frustrating crapshoot at times.

3 ST's ago, I watched some guy the reds hired as a special instructor, working Szymanski for the better part of an hour. Originally, he was a Switch hitter, although I read last year he'd given up one or the other side. This coach was growing visibly frustrated, during the drill. He had a hitch in his swing, trying to "kill" every pitch, and hit alot of high fly balls and pop-ups, that's all. The Reds pretty well soured on him 2 years ago. He made the right career choice.
