Lots of folks are giddy about the Reds starting staff and the possibilities this season. Being a baseball pessimist I always am wary, but one thing to note is that the buzz is based on a norm.. a norm of what we call Cincinnati Reds pitching, and that hasn't been pretty and this is what we have seen during the last 8 seasons, and why many still cling to their pessimism.

915 games started out of 1297 by pitchers with a sub average ERA.

Sobering.

Six guys have started for the Reds and have success against the league average ERA.

Six.

Good thing the past isn't the future. Three of those guys will be in the 2009 rotation. Let's keep out fingers crossed.

I can't believe Graves made 32 starts. I remember the experiment, but didn't think it lasted THAT long.

Couple of things I noticed.

Harang's numbers took a huge hit last year.

Lance Davis had a better rookie campaign than Cueto and never pitched again for the Reds

Lohse was basically a league average pitcher yet many Reds fans disliked him immensely

Two of the Reds biggest name pitchers (Dempster and Milton) were awful as Reds. Dempster went from being an all star, to a dud as a red, back to an all star.

I'd say that Cuetos rookie season trumps Davis, mainly because his K rate gives you great hope while Lance's told great truths

Lance Davis was better suited as a reliever rather than a starter.

Plus, Lance had other problems that fed into his abilities to deal with baseball.

He had some talent; he had some headcase.
