TMZ.com reports that 22-year-old Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident hours after his start Wednesday night against the A's.
A local news station, NBC25, has confirmed the report. According to TMZ: "Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick." The van driver reportedly fled the scene before eventually being apprehended, and has been charged with felony hit-and-run. The identities of the other victims have not been revealed, but TMZ reports that "one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization." Apr. 9 - 11:18 am et

Just horrible. He threw pretty well last night too, and was probably on cloud 9 for having been named to their starting rotation.

First herd about the guy this spring when some redzoners mentioned him as a potential return for one of our starters.Seemed like we were pretty excited about the prospects of getting him.Very sad news.

Tragic to see this happen to any 22 year old, especially anyone with a promising future like I'm sure Adenhart had.

Jesus, that is really, really terrible.

Sort of brings into perspective the important things to remember about life.

Really sorry to hear that. Kind of takes you back to Darryl Kile and reminds you that baseball really is a fraternity.

Extremely Sad. It's being reported on the Radio here in the LA area the driver was drunk, and was driving on a suspended license, from a prior DUI.

This was their #1 pitching prospect. This would be like this happening to Homer Bailey in comparison. And I was thinking about it in terms of, this young man was Jay Bruce's age. This is crushing, the most crushing thing to happen in our sport in a long, long time. It is chilling that he threw 6 shutout innings last night in what is a performance to remember him by. I want to send prayers and thoughts to his family and friends. God bless them and I hope they know Nick is a true Angel now. Unreal. I can't stop thinking about this.

Unbelievable tragedy. Couldnt believe it when I heard it. As would be expected the Angels postponed their game today. Cant remember a time when something like this happened to such a young pro during the season.

You are correct. He also fled the scene of the accident. Goes without saying that the perpetrator's life is over.
