Againt the lefty, Dusty has it right. I might have even hit Bruce seventh with Hernandez sixth.

This is the way to attack lefty pitchers, a lot of righty bats hitting consecutively.

Every single starter needs to write an essay on how they can effectively retire lefthanded hitters. At least a thousand words. They look completely lost against lefties, and not necessarily great lefties either--just any old lefty.

Reds pitchers aren't aggressive enough with their fastball. They try and be too cute and throw breaking balls too often. When you have a good fastball like Cueto, come after guys. To leadoff the game, he gets ahead of Wilson 0-2, then nibbles, nibbles, nibbles, count gets to 3-2 and then Wilson gets a hit.

This is a Dick Pole problem IMO. I don't think he's the right man for this pitching staff. Soto would never do it full time, but I want someone like that who actually knows how to work with pitchers and find what they're best at.

Let me be the first to say that we may be seeing sophomore slumps from our whiz-kids Cueto and Volquez. They don't look anything like last year. It's early and hopefully they'll get back to form, but maybe the league has caught up with them?

And no matter what anyone says, our offense is anemic. The names may be changed on the lineup, but the result against worthless junkball lefties is the same. Out, out, out.

Long day coming up as Bruce nails a man at the plate. Still Cueto isn't fooling anyone.

Probably, but that last ball could have made it 5-0 and put us out of the game early. He may be having a bad day, but the performance by both of those guys is simply horrendous and since it's against probably the worst team in the division, it's even more apalling. Hard to believe the problem is Dick Pole. Seems to me the problem is with the guy who pronounced the Reds as having the "best 12 man staff" in the division.

Harang had a bad year. Arroyo is up and down. Volquez started great last year, but tailed off toward the end. Cueto has good stuff but wasn't that successful last year.

To beat this lefty pitcher, the Reds have to get some offense from Phillips and EE. And I mean more than a couple of walks.

IMO, this is a Jermaine Dye game. When the Reds decided not to go for someone like Dye, they opted for this type of lineup against lefties. If they can't break through with Phillips and EE, it exposes a weakness.

Here's what gets old:

When people look at any one play in isolation and then jokingly reference four months of nuanced conversation as if that one play answers any of that. It gets old. And it happens all the time in the game threads. It was a great catch by Taveras. But that one play in isolation doesn't answer anymore of that discussion than the Willie Mays Hayes pop-up he had to start the game. Happily, when that happened, no one leaped in to say "see, he sux".

In my opinion, it is tedious as hades.

The 5 K's are encouraging for Cueto, but he tries WAY too hard for strikeouts. Sometimes he just needs to realize when he's facing a bad hitter and come right at them before it becomes a hitter's count.

I still think we have a future gem in Cueto, but he still has a lot of maturing to do as a pitcher.

I just got the clarification from Direct TV...and I'm LIVID about this...so for you folks who spent the $$$ on Extra Innings, here is the scoop:

Today's game is only broadcast on the two regional networks of the teams (FoxSports Ohio and Pittsburgh). Because it's not on the Extra Innings schedule, even though it's televised on the local Fox Sports networks, you won't get the game (ie. it's blacked out), unless you live in those two areas. So for me, for instance, living in Vegas, if the Reds were playing the Giants, Padres, Dodgers, or DBacks, I would get the game locally, BUT ONLY IF IT'S NOT ON EXTRA INNINGS. If it is on Extra Innings, then it'll be blacked out.

It would have behooved me/us to just get MLB.TV since the only blacked out games are the ones for your area (in my case, 7 teams!).

I'm absolutely LIVID today about this crap!

Wow, you should be. I would demand your money back or contest the charge with your credit card company immediately. That is garbage.

Wow, it's one start. One start. Did you watch Lincecum, Sabathia, Lee, Hamels, and Lester get rocked?

So far, in five games, four of the Reds starters -- including Bailey at AAA -- have been hit hard. It would be good for someone to pitch well at some point because otherwise the Reds will be out of it before Memorial Day.

That rainout and then not making it a doubleheader today really helped the Pirates. They got to move their ace Maholm up and remove their No. 5 starter from the rotation for now.

I know they are trying to "save the pitchers' arms because it's early in the season" but all it's doing is helping the Pirates. Not if he gives up this many long hits.

Good K/BB totals are important, but you can't have these lapses with the other batters. Cueto's undoing is usually long hits. Too many homers, too many shots off the wall.

Cueto has to figure out how to induce more ground balls, or how to pitch around the very tough hitters, or whatever, but if he continues to give up these bombs, he won't succeed - even with the strikeouts.

IMO, the good K/BB ratio tends to mask what really happened out there today.

Agree. Not only was it possibly a confidence boost for Cueto, but it helped save the bullpen.

And Cueto needs to pitch deep into games to develop as a starter. If he's allowed to pitch 95 pitches and five innings, that will be his comfort level.

Some people will never get over any pitcher throwing more than 100 pitches.early in the seaon, young pitcher, 4 runs behind ... and if team is going to do anything the starting pitching will have to carry it. There really is no reason to leave him in. if you wear out a long reliever the one word you need to know is "next".

The Reds have got to win tomorrow. You can't start out 1-4 and then go on a 10 game road trip to Milwaukee, Houston, and Chicago.

Frickin Jack Wilson. Ball into the hole, looks like ticketed for LF, he plays it and throws Votto out fairly easily.

That's only 86 pitches for Maholm, he'll be back out for the 7th.

Votto looked awful running to first. That spiking clearly hurt him.

Herrera back to try and make up for his Opening Day jitters.

I can't think of another MLB manager who would have taken him out in that spot. And honestly, I guess I don't understand why "early in the season" has much to do with it anymore. It's not like pitchers sit around and eat Cheetos all offseason. These guys honestly should be able to hump it right out of the gate no problem, provided they keep up with the offseason regimen.

from CW "the Pirates were 2nd in BARISP last year, wouldn't have expected that".

probably not in your case, CW but it doesn't surprise me at all.

This offense is going to be very very bad.... Maholm may be a nice pitcher, but he's not Cy Young... That's what we're making him look like...

Granted it's Maholm, but a K is a K, esp after his OD jitters. Good start for DRH!

To some extent but going forward 109 pitches is not 125 or 135 pitches. If you take him out in the 4th inning at 80-85 pitches what do you have? A low confidence pitcher who has pitched below his expected pitch number for the day . Which I am guessing would be 100.

Instead, Cueto cruises through the 5th and shows MORE confidence in the 6th. He gets to his pitch mark and is stretched out enough that he can go 110 in his next start if "needed". And with Dusty it will probably be needed. Is it a risk? Maybe. I would consider it a low risk. Just my opinion.

Herrera walks Morgan. He's forgotten how to throw strikes.

Herrera not getting much love from the ump again on pitches at the knees. Just cause it's slower, doesn't mean it is a ball. Goodness.

Morgan draw a BB. Kinda.

He looked pretty strong in 6 2/3 against a clearly better offense in the Cards. Only 1 ER allowed.

To me the encouraging thing about Cueto's start is that he only surrendered one walk. I'm actually less enthusiastic about the Ks.

Morgan steals 2nd.

At some point, some Reds pitcher has to give Ramon H a legit shot to throw someone out. Hasn't happened yet.

Herrera then buckles down and humiliates Sanchez with a screwball for out #2.

Again, what does age have to do with it, ultimately? People groused when a much older guy like Harang threw 120 on OD. Tony C's right. People get the yips at the 100 pitch mark. Not sure if it's years and years of announcers dwelling on it, or what, but it's pretty commonplace.

Tell you what, the contrast after Cueto with Herrera is ridiculously stark.

2-2 count on McLouth.

The K's encourage ME because that's less the defense has to get involved. Overall I agree that the 1 BB is outstanding. Just need to limit the 3-2, 3-1, 2-2 counts.
