Thanks for the info. I haven't seen him enough to know how effective he is on righties vs lefties but I know he's been tougher on lefties in the past times I've seen him. Hopefully he gets everything working and just gets everyone out to make it easier on us. ;)

I know JHJ homered earlier in the game, but is this a spot where Dickerson should be used against the righty, particularly with a hole over there at 1b with Taveras held on?

I understand that he homered today, but counting on him to be the answer in LF is a sure-fire recipe for disaster.

Dusty, let Taveras straight steal. I have seen at least 5 times the last two games where Taveras goes and its fouled off. He's fast enough.

Hairston swings at a 2-0 pitch again, pops up weakly trying to jack it.

EE swings at a 1-0 pitch, following a 4 pitch walk...that is out of the strikezone, and he pulls it weekly to 3rd ala Boone/Reese/Boone/LaRue and many of the other 'top the outside pitch to 3rd" specialists.

These are just unprofessional at bats.....and will kill these guys over the course of a a season. Bleh.

I would never reference Jeter for anything except pointing out a current SS with poor range and I don't even predict playoffs through the heart of a season so that would never come up either, LOL :p:

I am not knocking JHJ's night, as his homer is how the Reds are up, but I am still a bit puzzled how that was not a good situation to have Dickerson pinch hit against McClung with that tasty hole over a 1b with Taveras being held on...

And IMO, Weathers has done more than enough to earn the 8th inning role. Jared Burton hasn't earned my trust there yet, and Weathers has been solid as a rock in that role.

The first time Weathers was with the Reds, I never thought he'd be able to garner 900 appearances. Well done, Mr. Weathers. One of the few to get better after 30.

I really like Dusty's confidence in Herrera tonight. A lot. That was a big spot to bring the kid in back in the 7th, but I was sure happy to see him as opposed to Lincoln. I know there is some skepticism on the board over how effective Herrera can be long term, but as much as he can change speeds, and with that wonderful scroogie, I think he can have a long and successful career.

Don't forget, he was part of the return for Josh Hamilton...

OBM, you and I have been expecting the worst from Weathers for years now.

This year I decided that no longer how bad he looks, how bad his peripherals are, I'm just going to trust that he knows what he's doing. I don't know how he does it, but he's been proving me wrong for years. I figure it will just be easier to assume that he's good, and maybe I'll even be right for a change.

For you *older*(ish) Reds zealots, John Franco wasn't a flame-thrower from the left side either, and Herrera reminds me a bit of Franco. I know Franco could dial it up a bit more than Herrera, but there are some similarties between the two in terms of approach....

Yes. He entered the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitched at least one inning. You can also get a save by finishing a game in which the tying run is on deck (or better), or pitching at least 3 innings to finish the game (and are not the winning pitcher).

I just caught the tail end of Baseball Tonight and they said Carpenter left the game after reaggravating a calf injury he had during spring training. No word on how serious it is for him though.

The 2008 Reds had records at one point of 4-2, 4-3, 6-4 and 6-5. After that point they fell under .500 for the rest of the season. The closest they came after that was 28-29 on June 1st after a three game sweep of the Braves.
