I had no idea the Reds were using Stewart as a starter this season.

It's probably not a full time move. I think it's just an effort to get him more innings and help develop his secondary stuff. It wouldn't surprise me if you see him in the Carolina bullpen by June.

Stewart: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Still no score after four innings.

someone said that the Reds are concerned about his ability to be effective two days in a row. I don't know if that's true, but if so then this is a full time move.

Yeah, I've been following their stats. They are probably the main guys I will follow this year.

I'd love to see Stewart develop as a starter. After Cueto and Volquez, and possibly Bailey, Reds don't have that many blue chip starting pitching prospects. Maybe Lotzkar, if he's healthy, but most others seem to be back of rotation guys. Stewart would be very valuable if he can develop as a starter.

Stewart's move to the rotation is indeed temporary. The Reds are doing it in order for him to develop his secondary offerings in a quicker fashion. OBM had it right.

What if he keeps dominating like right now though? Any chance they'll give it a shot considering there's not a whole lot of upper end starting pitching in the minors right now.

I didn't really ask that question when I looked into if he was being converted to a starter, so I don't really have an answer for that right now.

I'd have to think that's a no-brainer. If you've got a good starter, you let him start.

Sappelt leads off with a single for Dayton. Fort Wayne is 6-0 and has allowed all of 7 runs this season. Couple that with a poor Dayton offense so far and it may be a long night for the Dragons.

Dayton is a boring team right now. They're in between talent. Most of the Reds top draft picks last year were college guys who were too advanced for Dayton (Alonso, Buchholz, Stewart though he played there for a short time) while their highly touted Latin America signings are too young and not ready for Dayton yet. They should become more interesting when Kyle Lotzkar, Juan Carlos Sulbaran, and maybe Evan Hildenbrandt join the team. Plus, the Reds have four top 100 draft picks so a couple of those guys could end up in Dayton.

The coach just went to the pitching mound after Justin Smith gave up his 10th hit. There are now runners on the corners with one out. There was a DP, so Smith worked his way out of trouble in the 5th inning.

Smith's line so far: 5 IP, 10 hits, 2 runs, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, ERA 3.00

Federico Baez just replaced Smith in the bottom of the 6th, so that line is final.

I just got home a little bit ago from the Dayton - Tin Caps game. Final score was 7-0 Tin Caps. Dayton defintitely appears to be lacking talent at the moment. It probably does not help that it was the inagural game for Fort Wayne in their new stadium tonight. There was also talk around the stadium that maybe the Padres organization left a few players in Fort Wayne to help them open the new stadium in lieu of moving them up yet, but I have a hard time believing that.
Apparantly the pitcher for Fort Wayne was a high draft pick for the Pads a few years ago, and only pitched a few games before needing Tommy John surgery in July 2007. This was only his second start since coming back. He looked good, but the new stadium's radar gun was not working, so I have no idea how hard any of the pitchers were throwing.
I will be looking forward to catching more Dayton games while they are in Fort Wayne this year.

Does he need to clear waivers after being outrighted this time of year?
Yes, he had to clear waivers first. If a team wants to outright Richar again in the future, Richar has the option of refusing the assignment and signing with a different team.
