He reminds me of Rosales in that he gets very streaky.

You know he will start hitting for average eventually, but one walk in 31 ABs is kind of concerning.

Small sample size alert. If it happened in June nobody would outside of Louisville would notice.

I saw him Saturday for the first time this year and his glove and range looked really good. He ranged far in the hole and threw an absolute bullet to Barker to nab McCoutchen (IIRC) by half a step at first.

That's a play only Janish on the current Red roster makes.

The only real distinguishing factor as far as I can tell is that Valaika plays slightly better defense than Sutton or Rosales. Additionally he is a year or two younger.

Small sample size alert. If it happened in June nobody would outside of Louisville would notice.

Looking at his total body of work, I think "will he get on base enough in the majors" is a legitimate question.

Sutton does have better plate discipline.

Sure, it's legitimate question. But the data cited don't begin to answer it. Confirmation bias is one of the primary drivers for the improper use of small samples. Just because a small sample looks like we might expect a bigger sample to look doesn't make it any more legitimate.

I'll be watching to see how Valaika hits in AAA too. But it's a bit early to make any sort of judgment.

A big thing I want to see from Valaika in AAA is improved plate discipline. So far, he's not doing it. That's as far as the "judgement" goes. He's got a whole season to get back on track and I hope he does. I think you're taking "one walk in 31 ABs is a little concerning" and reading something into it that isn't there.

Chris Valaika, ss, Reds: A bad start to Valaika’s season got worse when he went on the disabled list with a broken right hand. The Courier Journal of Louisville reports that Valaika will have a cast on his hand for four weeks, though after the cast comes off he could miss more time. Valaika, 23, was struggling with Triple-A Louisville before the injury. He’s hitting .161/.210/.290in 99 plate appearances with four walks and 20 strikeouts.
