This game scares me tonight. The Cubs lineup seems to hit Cueto well and Lilly is so hot or cold as a pitcher. We could get the one who looks like Cy Young or the one who eventually gets hit around and I fear we may have gotten the one who looks like Cy tonight. I may flip back and forth between this game and the one on ESPN just to keep my sanity, LOL

My opinion is that MOST short stops get to that ball. I'm not in love with Janish and don't see him as a starter, but I think he's the better defensive (and dare I say offensive) player of the two.

Late to this thread. Glad Dusty realizes Phillips at clean-up isn't etched in stone, but does anyone think dropping him down against a lefty is odd timing? 0for 21 be darned. Phillips has has three things really going for him: He's a great defender, he runs really fast and he destroys lefty pitching. His value comes from those three things.

Should make him the number 6 guy permanently against RH pitching (or maybe 7th), but against a lefty, he hits in the top 4 some place IMO.

I wouldn't get too worried about who hits fourth and who hits sixth. Bottom line is that neither EE or BP has proven himself to be a cleanup hitter. Whichever guy hits fourth is really hitting out of position.

Key is to get these right handed hitters swinging a decent bat. Right now, the entire right handed group is in a deep slump. Lefties aren't doing too much better.

Tony Cloninger
04-22-2009, 09:45 PM
Phillips is 1 for 19 vs Lilly.....so LH or not....he should be batting 7th.

EE is 5 for 18 against Lilly.

The 1982 Reds actually....had a BA of about .282 going into May and most of that month......they just had NOBODY who could drive in a run to save their lives. They would score 2-4 runs and have 10 hits....in some games.

By June-July though....they were barely scoring 2-3 runs a game.

With the proliferation of 12- and 13-man pitching staffs (I'm sure that someone is eventually going to go with a 14-man staff at some point), I think that it will become more important to have starting pitchers who can occasionally do other things for the club in a pinch. Owings can PH, Cueto could PR, Arroyo could do both (though I would only consider him as a PH in low-leverage situations).

Yeah, that's now been said hundreds of times, I get it.

I have a different view. Hot periods don't necessarily coincide with one season. A hitter can find it for a period that lasts a few months, a season, a season and a half, two seasons.

It's unfair to judge Hairston right now. He is a platoon against lefties, he doesn't play regularly. He was in the WBC which likely messed up his usual training and he got sick during the WBC which likely set him back.

On the other hand, Hairston has swung at some bad pitches this year which, I understand, has been an issue during his career.

So the jury is out on Hairston, but that wasn't some mirage out there last year. That was JHJ and I'm convinced he can be good if given some time this year to get going.

Right, so Dickerson hasn't had a chance to get going either. The season is only 12 games old and these guys are splitting a position. Give them a chance.

Frankly, I'm not that worried about Dickerson or Hairston, they are not the backbone of the team, there's not a huge expectation for either of them. I'm more concerned with some of the other guys, including EE who just struck out and is in another long slump.

Kepp led the team in GIDP's last season with 14. Tejada led the league with a whopping 32 GIDP's with D. Lee second with 27. Brandon is hardly a GIDP machine.

Yes. Frankly, that's the point, KC. There are oodles of ways to get offense into LF, and they have to somewhat cold-blooded about it. But it may not be a total loss this year, the Reds might get decent production out there. Just give them a chance.
