Well, it turns out I'm not going to the game after all. :(

I can tell you now, the wind should be blowing out at a fairly brisk pace at Slugger Field tonight. Let's hope Daryl can keep it down.

Dayton rained out in South Bend. Dayton LHP Matt Fairel named MWL Pitcher of the Week today. Fairel struck out 12 in six innings on Tuesday and then eight over seven innings yesterday. He does not throw hard...87-89. He has been very successful at getting strikeouts with his fastball, mostly called third strikes when hitters are looking for the breaking ball away and he puts the fastball on the inside corner. One of the few bright lights for Dayton right now.

Easy going for Thompson
Bats righty cruises in 6-3 win over Indianapolis
By Michael Grant mgrant@courier-journal.com April 28, 2009

The Louisville Bats jumped on the Indianapolis Indians quickly in a 6-3 victory at Louisville Slugger Field last night, riding a four-run first to give Thompson (1-1) a cushion.

Thompson was rocked in his season debut last week after returning from right shoulder inflammation, surrendering seven runs in four innings in a 14-4 loss at Columbus. He was considerably more effective last night, allowing three runs and four hits in 52/3 innings, walking one and striking out none.

"I'm pretty satisfied," Thompson said. "I threw a lot of sliders. I usually don't do that. I felt pretty good. I guess I'm 100 percent. The thing is to get back on the mound and get my location back. I feel like I'm getting better each time I go out there."

Bats manager Rick Sweet liked what he saw from Thompson, who was the Cincinnati Reds' Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season. He went a combined 8-4 with a 2.70 ERA, including 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA in seven starts for the Bats.

"It's nice for him to get the win," Sweet said. "He looks very good."

Louisville made it easy for Thompson by getting to Daniel McCutchen (1-2). McCutchen, the Pittsburgh Pirates' ninth-ranked prospect, has suffered both of his losses against Louisville.

It took only two pitches for the Bats to score as Norris Hopper singled on the first pitch and came home on Danny Richar's double. The inning was capped by a one-out, two-run home run from Wes Bankston.

It was Bankston's third straight game with a home run, and the 4-0 lead helped take the pressure off Thompson.

"It helped a lot," Thompson said. "I know with this team I don't feel like I have to strike everybody out. I don't have to do everything myself. I have relievers behind me. They can shut it down for me. Regardless of having a lot of runs in the first or second inning, I always feel pretty comfortable."

The run support was enough for Thompson to relax. He didn't allow a hit until a leadoff double in the fourth by Luis Cruz, who scored after two groundouts. Steve Pearce's solo home run made it 4-2.

Indianapolis got to the right-hander again in the sixth as Cruz singled and stole second, then scored on a two-out single by Garrett Jones to chase Thompson.

Louisville picked up insurance runs in the sixth and seventh. Luis Bolivar led off the sixth with a single and scored on Stubbs' two-out double.

Adam Rosales added an RBI hit in the seventh to make it 6-3.

Bats relievers Carlos Fisher, Robert Manuel and Josh Roenicke didn't allow a hit in 31/3 innings. Roenicke picked up his second save.

Louisville will go for the two-game sweep this morning at 11:05. Louisville right-hander Ramon Ramirez (0-1, 6.32) will face Virgil Vasquez (0-1, 4.32).
