Interesting article.

Jerry Hairston was picked up for nothing before the 2008 year & had a great year. Then the Reds made the mistake of giving him a 2 year deal.

Mike Lincoln was picked up for nothing & had a nice run in 2008. Then the Reds made the mistake of giving him a 2 year deal.

So far this year Lance Nix has played very well.

I like the concept of taking a flier or two on a couple of position player & a couple of pitchers signed to minor league deals each off season.
You hope that you can get a bench guy or a middle reliever cheaply. Or maybe you have rookie pencilled in to start & need an emergency plan.

The problem teams make is after catching lightning in a bottle they think it is real & sign the guy long term.

I agree with your point but relax. Hairston was not given a two year deal. Just one year at $2mill
