Hopefully the Reds monitor Homer Bailey closely today. He threw 119 pitches in his last start. Hopefully he can build on his last start and have another nice outing today.

I'm also interested in seeing how Fairel pitches. He's been dominant in his last two starts.

Roster move:

Notes: The Dragons sent pitcher Leonardo Astorga to Billings to make room on the roster for Sulbaran. Astorga was 0-3, 18.00 in four starts.

Valaika also singled. Let's hope his May is better than his April was.

Anyone with the Big Ten Network, I encourage you to turn it on right now. A very INTERESTING game in the 9th with a great pitching performance so far.

Not minor league related, but Ohio State sophomore standout Alex Wimmer no-hits Michigan

Homer Bailey: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB, 37 Strikes, 17 Balls, ERA at 5.18

Bats lead 2-0.

Bailey: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB, 51 Strikes, 20 Balls, ERA at 4.97.

Gameday has a lot of his pitches in the heart of the plate. Maybe he's changing speeds effectively, or maybe the Buffalo hitters just aren't any good (very possile judging from their avgs.).

Bats still lead 2-0.

Gameday can't be trusted for accurate pitch placement.

Sounds like Homer is starting to hit his stride. Good. I still think he is a mid-year call-up to replace either Arroyo or Harang who still may be trade bait come the All-star break. That will be especially the case if Bailey is dealing in AAA.

Homer gets his first complete game as a pro.

He finishes up with 2 Ks in a row for a total of 5 in 7 innings.

Bats win 2-0.

Homer's ERA is down to 4.61 and improves his record to 3-2.

His ERA was 11.25 on April 14th.

Looks like a 7-inning "complete game" shutout for Bailey in the second half of the DHer.

7 innings, 5 hits, 5 Ks, 1 BB, 106 pitches, 78 strikes, 28 balls.

Well. That is solid...

Bats win 2-0...

His ERA has plummeted to 4.61. He's now had three reaaaalllll solid starts in a row.

his last pitch for the K was his best curve all day. very nice performance. Worked mainly with his fastball but showed breaking pitches enough to keep the hitters off balance.

Just keep him at AAA and let him pitch. Don't push the innings too much. Expect a few clinkers. Then get him up to Cincy in September and hopefully he never has to go back down to AAA.

I think he's getting it together. I'd still like to see the hits come down but I like the number of strikes.

Homer turns 23 tomorrow.

Stats over his last 3 starts:

IP 19.1 - H 15 - ER 4 - BB 7 - K 23 - ERA 1.86 - WHIP 1.14 - OPP AVG .214

Not to throw cold water on the enthusiasm for Homer's recent performances but Columbus, Toledo and Buffalo are not exactly high caliber competition. Let's see what he can do against a better hitting team before sending him up to the Reds again. It looks like he won't pitch against SWB but he should get a start against Durham shortly.

edit: I take it back. Columbus is actually 2nd in the league in team batting at .292. SWB leads at .305 and Louisville is 4th at .259.

Granted those 3 teams haven't been world beaters this year, but, and I think this is the most important thing, it's gotten his confidence up and he is starting to believe in himself (at least it seems that way). Hard to not get excited seeing his performance!

Bailey also had 10 groundouts to five flyouts.

I wouldn't call him up anytime soon. I'd leave him in Louisville and let him dominant, then bring him up during the summer if he's needed. No need to rush him again.

Are we SURE Stewart can't be a starter?

Scrap Irony
05-02-2009, 07:49 PM
Stewart may once have been a reliever prospect, but, if he continues to pitch well, you may want to start thinking of him as a starter. He's got the stuff to be a #3 starter in the bigs.

Are we SURE Stewart can't be a starter?

It all depends on what hes throwing. He has the stuff to be dominate in the minors with almost 1 pitch honestly. I dont know if hes added any pitches to his rep though.

Doug, what can you make of that? It seems to make no sense at all to A. send a player performing relatively well at A+ down to rookie ball and B. have him sit and wait until Billings' season starts. You think it might be disciplinary?

I've said since spring training that Thom B talked to Reynolds and he said they were going to make Stewart a starter and no one wanted to believe that, so I guess I'll say it again, Thom talked to Reynolds and he said they wanna make Stewart a starter.

Thats very interesting because I talked to someone in player development, working with Stewart directly, about a week ago, who said they are looking at Stewart as a reliever but have him starting for the purposes of developing his pitches quicker.

I don't doubt you heard it, I just find it interesting that within a month of eachother, we had two people well inside the Reds organzation say two different things about last years 2nd round draft pick.

IMO, we shouldnt be arguing over whether he's a RP or SP, I like the fact that he threw 8 innings of good solid baseball, I want him to sky rocket to the majors.
