Burton kind of has a Amish thing going on too.

Didn't Bagwell sport a similar beard a couple of years ago?

And that's why it's a YEARLY award.

I caught some of the SD/LA game that Gaudin started today. His beard's about half as long today as it is in that photo.

Sutter's beard was fairly conventional for the time and only had a season or two were it looked a little unkempt. He's just a little bit older than me and my beard was exactly like his at that time. I still have it, having not shaved at all since 1978.

Kern knew how to get out of Cincy.....he just started growing his beard again late in 1982 and he was gone.

NO shaving since 1978? I bet you would look 10 years younger if you did....you must save a lot of money on shaving equipment.

It wasn't soon enough for me. I hated that guy. He made Danny Graves at the end of his Reds tenure look like Mariano Rivera.

If I recall correctly, Jim Kern threw two wild pitches in his Reds debut. It was opening day and I was at the game. He never met a baserunner he didn't like.

The title of this thread sounds like something Ron Burgandy would say, "Great Chad Gaudin's beard!"

That "runaway" icon is appropos. This fall marks the 40th anniversary of me starting high school. Yikes! The people who finished grade school forty years before me were the class of 1929. How on earth is that possible?

I picked up a Yearbook from a HS here in Portland from 1929, cost me 50 cents... it's a gas... it sits on a shelf with my 60 year old mitt, a Crosley Radio (wood) and a 1909 Baseball Joe novel
