Fay reports today on his blog that AGon strained his oblique last night and is probably headed for the DL. How we will survive without his hot bat is anyone's guess. Fay also mentioned it will be interesting to see who they call up in his absence. Anyone you guys would like to see?

I'm just glad that Dusty can't play Jerry Hairston Jr. at SS and 3rd at the same time.My guess is that Rosales will get more time at 3rd with JH Jr. moving to SS.

You've never seen that Bugs Bunny episode, have ya? :)

Now playing 3rd base...Jerry Hairston.
Now playing 2nd base...Jerry Hairston.
Now pitching...Jerry Hairston.
Now catching...Jerry Hairston.

Checking the 40 man roster...the only available infielders are Francisco and Castillo. Can't imagine they'd call up Francisco already, so my guess is Castillo...who can play multiple positions.

ack....Janish or Hairston everyday...that's not going to help us offensively...hopefully EE gets back soon so that Rosales can play SS...

Rosales is at best a Keppinger-like SS. He can play it but Janish is MUCH better with the glove.

Hairston is going to so play SS you just have to expect it at this point.

Didn't Janish make an error last night that cost us the game? You are probably right but with all the offensive struggles, I would take the extra offense over the 'better' defense. Just my opinion...Dusty will play Hairston anyway so the point is probably moot...

Id take a throwing error caused by a runner and a slow moving pitcher over a jeter esque ranged SS every day of the week no matter how they hit the ball.

Drew Sutton could be called up. He is on the 40-man according to cincinnatireds.com.

This is what everyone on this website wanted. We got rid of the old ErrorE, and now it looks like the crafty vet AGON is gone now. Lets see what happens. I bet they bring up a catcher just to spit all of us.

BTW Keppinger is hitting .364 for Houston. Only 33 at bats, but it just goes to show how the Reds give up on guys who could help them. Obviously we don't have room for Encarnacion, Agon, Kepp, Hairston, Janish and Rosales. But is Kepp really the guy that we should have axed out of that list?

So, if you were the Yankees, you would trade for Janish and start him ahead of Jeter???????????????? C'mon, nobody would do that. Jeter is over-rated defensively but still.

An error is an error no matter the player. I would still take Rosales or Kepp at SS over the toothpick bat of Janish.

Did you read what you wrote? Dusty will play Hairston, so it really doesn't matter. Hairston may be Dusty's next Neifi...

If janish could hit league average yea id probably take him over Jeter.

Bumstead

Personally, I don't think Janish can hit league average or even close to it over the long haul of a full season. He can be a utility infielder at best IMHO. Losing AGon surprisingly will hurt this offense.

By the way, I don't like Jeter either.

Losing Alex is going to hurt our offense? Is this the same Alex as the one thats batting under .200 and has a career OBP of under .300?

No I think having someone take every pitch instead of having Gonzalez probably would be an upgrade.

I guess this is the part where Janish takes his spot for good.

Bumstead
05-05-2009, 03:16 PM
haha....well it's probably the combination of having both EE and Gonzo out that hurts us the most. It means playing 2 people that are/should be on the bench instead of just one. The offense is bad with the starters as it is. Losing starters will hurt. Thank goodness the pitching is really good!

Hairston at SS tonight. Proof dusty just thinks fast guys are automatically good defenders.

He did fine at shortstop last season. He was a huge spark plug for us.

Janish isn't error free either (loss last night)

I dont care what Hairston did last year. The dude was awful at SS and is hitting worse than Janish.

Then again I judge defense off actually ability not some number someone in a booth assigns to someone.

Yeah, I'd like to see Janish get the ABs. He's shown more pop this year and plays a slick defensive SS.

05-05-2009, 06:44 PM
Lets face it, losing Gonzales is no loss unless they stick JHJ's glove out there to replace him. Janish can go out there and swing at pitches 2 feet off the plate and take strikes right down the middle and choke in every single clutch ab and he'll match Gonzales at the plate but he can also match him in the field.

Bumstead
05-05-2009, 06:56 PM
Gonzalez is not as bad at the plate as Janish will be, it's not close...Mark it down and come back to it. At least Gonzalez can hit for some pop at some point. Janish's career numbers aren't the fluke...his current .400 batting average is the fluke! Do you really think Janish is a better Major League hitter than he was as a Minor Leaguer????? Really? Gonzo will be missed offensively because both his replacements can't hit; Hairston was a mirage and shouldn't be playing everyday either. Of course someone has to play, so Dusty will most likely choose his boy Jerry. All I'm saying is that while he's out, we will miss Gonzo offensively; yeah, he's not hitting well now, but overall he is better than the other 2 options.

Well, I just think the Gonzo you are talking about doesn't exist anymore.

Bumstead
05-05-2009, 07:14 PM
You could be right; I don't know. He's been out a long time and he has 74 AB's this year that would say he can't hit...I'm just annoyed (termed lightly) that our options come down to Janish and Hairston...too bad Valaika isn't hitting or maybe the Reds would give him a shot.

I'm guessing Janish will get some starts against left handed pitching. They won't start Dickerson against a lefty, so that would push Hairston back out to left field in those games. Castillo is probably called up to be insurance on the bench.

Hairston at SS is weak with the glove, but he has the potential to hit better than AGon has so far this year.

Why does everyone have so little faith in Janish? He's a solid SS despite his throwing error the other night. That would have been a difficult play for most veterans. He has a solid bat and seems to have a yearning for the game. Why not give him a solid chance?

Is there any chance that with JHJ moving to a fulltime infielder for the time being that we will bring up an OF? Maybe we'll see Gomes, I think he deserves a chance. And if the callups roll is mainly going to be for pinch hitting anyway, I'd much rather have Gomes over Sutton or Castillo.

I know it wont happen for various reasons IE 40 man roster, skipping a level... But if I was in the FO I'd bring up Heisley...

He has done nothing but hit hit and hit some more plus he seems to be an above avg defender...

AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG OPS
87 19 30 7 1 4 11 17 6 7 1 .462 .586 .345 1.048

17 wlk and only 6 k's showing a little bit of pop and can steal a base. I really think he might be our best hitting prospect south of Frazier who numbers arent as good at the same level and Alonso how is hitting worse at a lower level.

Ive seen other teams do it why couldnt the reds?
