That CHI game was against Lieber....and it was Baylor i think who said that back in 2002.

I'm just not a fan of the all speed, no power type. He's had a good run at the beginning of May to lift his stats (including a HR). I still think at the end of the year, he won't have enough hot streaks like the one he's on to be average.

I agree VR. I'm 'watching' this on game center but, from comments on the board, EV apparently has great stuff today but can't seem to control it. Game center's pitch locater seems to confirm that. It's one of those days where his ball is moving but he doesn't know exactly where.

I also agree that with Volquez, he has to believe he is better than the guy holding the bat, no matter who he is, and attack the batter, not do it the other way around.

Yeah the HR to Pujols was indicative of his movement to some extent. It was supposed to be a FB down and away and he left it up and out over the middle. The Reds as a group still need to do a better job pitching in. Volquez often gets into trouble when he tries to overthrow pitches, I seen him actually overthrow a change up last inning..

Tough outing for DRH, seemed to get squeezed by ump, then had to come in and gave up a single to center.

DRH is obviously still a question. Viola pitching well at AAA, could get a shot as the second lefty if DRH falters.

Really, I thought all 3 balls were obviously outside.

Volquez' walk to Albert was ok, but the walk to Ludwig really hurt. Now game may be out of reach and V's ERA has taken a hit.

Herrera and Burton each touched for RBI singles, balls not exactly clobbered, just fell in. Could just be luck make things even after Reds win first two games of the series.

Herrera's like a .350 OB hitter with a .200 SLG percentage. You like the .350 OBP, but that SLG is simply unsustainable. I hope I'm wrong about Herrera. He looked pretty timid facing Duncan.

Great!

I was pointing out that with 11 Ks, saying he "pounded strikes" might not be the most farfetched thing George said today.

DRH has been 'OK'. Not great, not terrible. He's different in what he throws and the speed he throws it at. He does seem to need to throw more strikes and sometimes the umpires do seem to 'squeeze' him.

Don't forget, many of the umps are seeing his 'stuff' for the first time too and they may not have seen someone throw this 'hard' since they did high school games. ;)

To be fair, it doesn't take throwing strikes to rack up Ks in the early going of a season. From what I've seen, Herrera's been much more wild than a strike zone pounder.

There's been a lot of talk of Gomes replacing Hairston, etc., but now after 30 games I think the correct move is Gomes up and McDonald down.

Thing is that McDonald doesn't get to play the outfield very much so any defensive difference would seem unimportant.

I'm not suggesting Gomes necessarily should be in a regular platoon. But in the late innings when you need a good at bat against a lefty - like right there - Gomes would be preferable.

A bit later in the season, Stubbs might be the guy to replace McDonald. He's hitting well, although not for a lot of power. If Stubbs keeps it up until mid-season, he might be a choice for a bench spot.

Just don't see McDonald's role at this point.

So. The Reds already thin bench is down to Gonzo, Dickerson and Janish. Gonzo can't play supposedly and, if you do play him, you waste those retroactive days if you decide to put him on the DL.

You've got one OFer and one IFer left and no backup catcher. If this thing goes extra innings there may be some people get to see their dream come true with Owings playing the OF.

I agee with FCB, DL Gonzo for a few more days and stop playing short-handed.
