Great job by Owings!

HokieRed

He's going well and I hope he continues. But for some of us at least it's his sub .700 career OPS and his batting 4th that don't go together.

Need to add correction: against righthanders.

I think we're seeing a little bit of how much it means to these guys to be on this team. When Votto and BP were both out sick, the other guys all started hitting better and basically picked them up by not letting their absences get them down. They're picking up their pitchers by making plays behind them. The two catchers have been on fire with increased playing time and for Hernandez, he's actually playing out of position for the first time in a while and not doing too badly. Tonight they're picking up Micah while he's pitching against his former team (which is sometimes a stressful situation) and picking up Joey too because he had to leave the game which I'm sure made him unhappy. I guess I just see a real TEAM forming with these guys and it's just wonderful to watch this year. :)

Anyone who followed him last year would see how talented Hairston is. Don't know what happened early in his career, whether it was bad habits, or injury, or what. His natural position is second base. Welch made the point last night that Hairston is not a bad shortstop, he just lacks a true shortstop's throwing arm.

Strange there, Owings comes out for the eighth, hits a guy, then leaves.

While Owings was only at 89 pitches, keep in mind it's like 6,000 degrees out there in Arizona. Hell, Votto already had to leave due to it. I think Micah just got gassed earlier than usual tonight, and the hitters were letting us know it towards the end, even if the rockets didn't fall for hits.

Ump appeared to have called the first pitch to Drew a strike. Instead, it was called a ball. Cordero never got the message and thought he struck Drew out. Now he's walked him.

But the great first baseman Ramon Hernandez makes a good play to end the game. Reds win.

Really, this Reds team is transformed in terms of pitching and defense.

Why don't we see a replay? He clearly called strike on that pitch.

He kind of half put his arm up to the side like it was a strike, but not all the way. He was caught in between and never made it clear what he was calling. I saw him say 3-1 before the pitch that Cordero thought was a K, so I knew that wasn't a K, but Wendelstadt blew that first pitch. It was a great curve ball from Cordero and should have been a K.

But it's all good! Reds win, Reds win!

That is the 3rd win of the year for Owings. It brings to mind a stat John Fay had in his blog last week. Last year the Reds had 4 wins all year from the 5th starter from all the people they tried at 5th starter. So they have almost matched that in mid May.

I don't know what happened to Ramon between his Baltimore stint and coming to Cincinnati but he's like a different player this year in hitting, catching, defense, and definitely in his demeanor. So, you don't think there will be any more posts about people hoping the Reds find someone else for the No. 5 role? haha. I love it!

The Dunner-for-Owings trade is working out quite well for us. And we could have re-signed Dunn when he became a FA if we really wanted him. (He's having a very good season with the Nats BTW. But I still like getting Owings for him when Dunn was on the verge of being a free agent.)

It would be pretty nice. And considering he's been the Reds' ace so far this year and the D-Backs are starting a rookie making his MLB debut, I am fully expecting the brooms to be brought out.

And I fully know that the Reds have a history of making rookies in their MLB debut look like Cy Young, but this year just feels different on many levels.

After looking at the replay, I think Owings hit Roberts on purpose in the 8th inning. Check out the look on Phillips' face. You could tell he appreciated Owings retaliating.

Anytime your number 5 starter can beat the other teams number 1 starter that's a good accomplishment. In years past the Reds would have had no chance in a game like this. Very encouraging and I think, at the least, the Reds will be able to hang around in the wild card race this season. Maybe better than that if things continue as they have in the last 10 days or so.

I'm expecting they'll mention that at least a dozen times during tonight's game.

Two straight big wins from Owings. I really like the way the guy competes in all aspects of the game -- he's a pretty unique player. The step-in-the-bucket swing is playground old school. And hitting that guy to lead off an inning when you're working on a shut out...it says a lot. I doubt there are many pitchers who would do that. As I've said before, Owings may not be a great pitcher or a great hitter, but he is a great baseball athlete, and I have a feeling his value to the team is even greater than the sum of his on-field contributions.

On the flip side, the Dbacks look absolutely comatose to me. Byrnes, Drew, Reynolds, Young, Upton, among others -- they all seem like they're going through the motions. Wouldn't be surprised if the managerial change there is unpopular with the players. Good young talent on that team, but their progress has screeched to a halt. When you shake up the coaching staff, and your team comes out looking like that -- bad, bad sign.

The look of A.J. Hinch in the dugout each of the 50 times both nights that they have showed him has removed a presupposition of mine that says "how hard can it be to be the manager of a major league team?" I have never seen anyone look so clueless in a major league dugout. Every time they show him, he has this deer in the headlights look like "I know I should be doing something, flashing a sign, clapping my hands, spitting, something, but I cannot think of anything to do except stare aimlessly at the field."

The only thing he is missing is the "Management Trainee" badge.

Good call. I was thinking the same thing last night. Hinch and whoever stands beside him (Bench or Pitching Coach) look like two business men who wandered into the dugout with uniforms on. They seriously look out of place. I've never seen them speak to another player, give high fives, or even show a little a bit of emotion. Anyone see a replay or have it on tape?I noticed right away that he did not call it a strike, but was motioning that it was inside. He has a very loud and distinct strike call, both verbal and hand signal, which he did not do. I think the hand motion is what confused everyone to think he called it a strike, which it was, he missed the pitch. Having followed the team for so long, I thought for sure the collapse was coming for sure after that, we'd lose the game, and go 1-5 on the road trip ;)

Yea. Especially from Phillips who is world renowned for his nonchalance. Did anyone notice his busting arse after he posed for his homerun? He knew it was gone so he did his best Rosales after he started off around the bases.
