Cueto went for the fake tag trick when Upton came home to score. Grace felt this is a real good way to get a player hurt.

05-14-2009, 12:24 AM
Taveras with another single....

He has the potential for a lot of multi hit games. When your swinging bunts off the end of the bat are routinely beat out at first, it makes your line look good when you have a legitimate base hit. where most players with his AB's would go 1-4 or 1-5 Taveras has the speed to make it a 2-4 or 3-5 night. A fun ballplayer to watch. I hated the signing but, I'm starting to become a fan :)

EDIT: and now he steals 2nd

Way to go Wily!!!!!

Number three and four hitters up, first and third no out, rookie pitcher in his sixth inning of work. Reds should have scored.

Of course they usually would, but it's no guarantee, especially for an average hitting team like the Reds.

But they won't always.

We scored three runs with two outs earlier. That's not a given.

We got to the rookie for 5 runs in 6.1 innings, a 7.14 ERA. I think our offense did a fine job, at it's done lately.

Just throwing this out there on Hairston's slow start...he came back from the WBC with the flu and had lost, reportedly, 10-12 pounds. So between the WBC and a very abbreviated spring training due to illness and being away, he can't have been remotely close to being ready in April.

I wonder if now that he is back to full health and has had enough at-bats to make up for what was missing in the spring, if that's why he is now locking in. And it is great to see.

Hairston's recent play has put me on the fence about where he should be playing. It's not unheard of for guys who are not actively in the game to lack focus at the plate. I can't believe I'm about to type this... Play Hairston at SS until his bat cools off. Give Gonzo 2-3 starts a week and let JHJ play in LF. wow. At this point a 4-2 road trip would feel like a disappointment. At least to me anyway.

Think he may be a little expensive to re-sign?

Yep, but spend the money. We haven't had a catcher with his skills since--I can't even remember. We spent so many years with the likes of David Ross, Javier Valentin, Paul Bako, and a host of others who couldn't catch, throw, or hit, it's a pleasure to watch this guy.

Isn't that Dontrell Willis' first game?

yeah if you look at the boxscore he was rocked pretty good but he didn't really pitch that bad. He gave up a jack to Morneau but the majority of the hits allowed were bloopish. He doesn't have as goofy of a delivery as when he first came up and as a result he doesn't have the same amount of movement or velocity. I'm rooting for the guy. Willis always seemed like one of the players who really enjoyed playing.

Herrera K's Drew to end the inning. Heading to the 9th it's a 10-3 ballgame.

2 walks, 0 K's, 1 Hr in 4.2 innings is pitiful.

When Willis stops missing bats, send him to the graveyard.

7/21 BABIP isn't particularly unlucky.

I'm with you. But catchers get old quickly and one day he just might just fall off a cliff - figuratively speaking. Plus, there are going to be no shortage of clubs who would want someone like him. Fortunately, we have dibs on him due to that option year. We're also a team on a budget.

I too was disappointed when we didn't score with 1rst & 3rd and nobody out.
a couple of innings later when Phillips drove in run #4 i was so pumped up that i woke up my cat (who was sleeping on the couch next to me).

FSN caught first a handclap, then the old "ear to nose to mouth back to nose" sign during tonight's game. A double switch was also properly executed for the second time in the series, although the pitcher did not make it through the inning this time. I am not sure if he hopped over the white line when coming to remove the pitcher, which is the real test. :D
