View Full Version : Re-do a draft - 2000

Back for a glorious second day, it's re-do a draft.

Today we're doing the 2000 draft, which sneakily produced talents in lower rounds. We're going 30 picks here and everybody taken in the 2000 draft is eligible, regardless if they signed. There's no formal picking order, whoever posts gets to make the next selection. Posters can make multiple picks, just don't make two selections in a row.

Anyone selected in the draft for the year in question is eligible. How he was rated prior to the draft should not be considered. The only considerations are how he has played to date and what kind of future you think he has. We're pretending we've got a time machine that takes us back to draft day 2000 with the benefit of knowing everything we know today.

Let's keep the current picks listed with each new pick and then just bold the new selection. For instance:

1. Dude A
2. Dude B
3. Dude C
4. Dude D
5. New Dude

And here's the first pick:

1. Chase Utley

That's a strong first six picks, amazing that four of those guys weren't even on the first round radar that season.

This will be a controversial one, but here goes:

7. Edwin Encarnacion

My only complaint so far is minor with Kinsler not going 4th. That type of production from a 2B is rare.

My only complaint so far is minor with Kinsler not going 4th. That type of production from a 2B is rare.

It was something I strongly considered when making the Bay pick. But in the end, Bay's doubled Kinsler's games total 800 to 400 to date. Kinsler is three years younger, but 400 additional games of .900 OPS production already in the book was too much to pass up.

Some interesting things about that 2000 draft...

The Rangers did the current Reds well by drafting Nix, Masset, and Encarnacion for us. :)

The Rockies drafted some dude named Michael Vick.

I thought he was a little overrated in the 1999 re-do. He's talented, but he's only qualified for one ERA title in six seasons to date. Just speaking for myself, I sort of expect his arm to fall off in the not-too-distant future.

I agree. His durability (or lack thereof) is and has been a major concern.

Still, though. 650 innings so far. 658 K's, with a career 45-21 record and he's not doing too bad in 2009 (4-1, 37.2 IP, 46 K).

And last year (10-2, 148 IP, 181 K, low 2.00 something ERA) was solid as well, although limited by his durability.

I wonder if he makes it past 30 at this rate.

Gotta love the homerism going on here :p: Encarnacion goes before a CY Young winner (Lee), a 3 hole hitting catcher (Martin), a dominant closer (Jenks), a batting champ (Sanchez), and a couple of decent starting pitchers (Wainwright, Maholm, Young, and Harden)

If I were to rate my top 5 in this draft I think I would go
Seizemore
Utley
Webb
Martin
Gonzalez

Oh, I see. The Baseball Cube has him as Russell Jeanson-Martin and never tied it together that he was the same guy drafted by the Expos in 2000.

Russell Jeanson-Martin actually has his own page on that site, seperate from Russell Martin.

If I were to rate my top 5 in this draft I think I would go
Seizemore
Utley
Webb
Martin
Gonzalez

Based on what he has done so far, I would agree. But if you think Edwin is going to break out some day then draft accordingly. Which is what happened. I don't share that particular "break out" opinion, but it can't simply be dismissed out of hand.

I thought he was a little overrated in the 1999 re-do. He's talented, but he's only qualified for one ERA title in six seasons to date. Just speaking for myself, I sort of expect his arm to fall off in the not-too-distant future.

Someone in the '99 thread mentioned Bullington, with an eye towards a trade. That goes double with Harden. There was a point around '04, when it looked like he was about to go Clemens on the American League and before the parts started to fall off, where a team could have just about named its price.

I was going to add Aaron Heilman, but I noticed that we have down Aaron Hill. He wasn't drafted until 2003 and doesn't show as being drafted and not signed. Did someone mean to put down Heilman instead?

If you remove those that eventually did not sign as part of the 2000 draft class (Connor Jackson - CLE/31-936, Aaron Hill - LAA/7-200, Chad Cordero - SD/26-769, Fred Lewis - MTL-WAS/20-585, Luke Scott - TB/45-1327, Paul Maholm - MIN/17-492, Ian Kinsler - ARI/29-879, Russell Martin - MTL-WAS/35-1035, the list is whittled down to..........

1. Chase Utley (PHI, 1-15)
2. Grady Sizemore (MTL/WAS, 3-75)
3. Brandon Webb (ARI, 8-249)
4. Adrian Gonzalez (FLA, 1-1)
5. Jason Bay (MTL/WAS, 22-645)
6. Edwin Encarnacion (TEX, 9-274)
7. Cliff Lee (MTL/WAS, 4-105)
8. James Shields (TB, 16-466)
9. Bobby Jenks (LAA, 5-140)
10. Dontrelle Willis (CHC, 8-222)
11. Rocco Baldelli (TB, 1-6)
12. Xavier Nady (SD, 2-49)
13. Chris Young (PIT, 3-89)
14. Adam Wainwright (ATL, 1-29)
15. Ian Snell (PIT, 26, 779)
16. Yadier Molina (STL, 4-113)
17. Nate McLouth (PIT, 25-749)
18. Garrett Atkins (COL, 5-137)
19. David DeJesus (KC, 4-104)
20. Brad Hawpe (COL, 11-317)
21. Rich Harden (OAK, 17-510)
22. Mike Napoli (LAA, 17-500)
23. Joe Inglett (CLE, 8-246)
24. Corey Hart (MIL, 11-321)
25. Kelly Johnson (ATL, 1-38)
26. Freddy Sanchez (BOS, 11-332)
27. Adam LaRoche (ATL, 29-880)
28. Chad Qualls (HOU, 2-67)
29. Josh Willingham (FLA, 17-491)

Omissions (of those who eventually signed with this draft class):

-Ryan Church (CLE, 14-426)
-Jason Kubel (MIN, 12-342)
-Brian Bruney (ARI, 12-369)
-Joel Hanrahan (LAD, 2-57)
-Todd Wellemeyer (CHC, 4-103)
-Laynce Nix (TEX, 4-124)
-Jose Bautista (PIT, 20-599)
-Clint Barmes (COL, 10-287)
-Nick Masset (TEX, 8-244)
-Ron Flores (OAK, 29-870)
-Jason Ellison (SF, 22-661)
-Edgar Gonzalez (TB, 30-886)
-Victor Diaz (LAD, 37-1107)
-Taylor Buchholz (PHI, 6-175)

According to The Baseball Cube, of the 1452 players drafted, 197 made it to the majors and 318 are still active in some form. Compare that to the 1999 draft class (85 to the majors and 197 still active) and you see that the 2000 draft was much deeper, which would explain the longer list.

The hindsight winners.....Montreal/Washington is the clear winner in my view, and it doesn't include the pick of Russell Martin (who did not sign):

Montreal/Washington
-Grady Sizemore (3-75)
-Jason Bay (22-645)
-Cliff Lee (4-105)

Atlanta
-Adam Wainwright (ATL, 1-29)
-Kelly Johnson (ATL, 1-38)
-Adam LaRoche (ATL, 29-880)

Florida
-Adrian Gonzalez (FLA, 1-1)
-Josh Willingham (FLA, 17-491)

Pittsburgh
-Nate McLouth (PIT, 25-749)
-Chris Young (PIT, 3-89)
-Ian Snell (PIT, 26, 779)
-Jose Bautista (PIT, 20-599)

Colorado
-Garrett Atkins (COL, 5-137)
-Brad Hawpe (COL, 11-317)
-Clint Barmes (COL, 10-287)

Philadelphia
-Chase Utley (PHI, 1-15)
-Taylor Buchholz (PHI, 6-175)

Arizona
-Brandon Webb (ARI, 8-249)
-Brian Bruney (ARI, 12-369)

Los Angeles Angels
-Bobby Jenks (LAA, 5-140)
-Mike Napoli (LAA, 17-500)

Tampa Bay
-James Shields (TB, 16-466)
-Rocco Baldelli (TB, 1-6)
-Edgar Gonzalez (TB, 30-886)

Texas
-Edwin Encarnacion (TEX, 9-274)
-Laynce Nix (TEX, 4-124)
-Nick Masset (TEX, 8-244)

Once again,

Thank you, Texas!

Great stuff BR.

Only four 1st round picks, plus one sandwich pick, made the list. This whole exercise is really underscoring how random the draft is. If I were feeling more enterprising, I'd tally up the total bonus amounts paid to everyone we've picked. I'm sure it would be a surprisingly low number.

I included Buchholz in the list of ommisions. I didn't include Heilman, Murphy, Young, and Gorzelanny because they did not sign with this class and were all drafted (and signed) in later classes. Missed McGowan.

McGowan seems like the perfect candidate to come back from Tommy John surgery and do a great Josh Johnson impersonation...

I miss the Expos. Even if they weren't great, it was another team in Canada.

Though DC should have a team.
