View Full Version : Re-do a draft - 2001

It's the hit that's sweeping the nation, it's re-do a draft.

Today we're doing the 2001 draft, which gets pretty dire pretty fast after you get past the first 10 picks. You might even be tempted to drafted Jeremy Sowers and not sign him. We're going 30 picks here and everybody taken in the 2001 draft is eligible, regardless if they signed. There's no formal picking order, whoever posts gets to make the next selection. Posters can make multiple picks, just don't make two selections in a row.

Anyone selected in the draft for the year in question is eligible. How he was rated prior to the draft should not be considered. The only considerations are how he has played to date and what kind of future you think he has. We're pretending we've got a time machine that takes us back to draft day 2000 with the benefit of knowing everything we know today.

Let's keep the current picks listed with each new pick and then just bold the new selection. For instance:

1. Dude A
2. Dude B
3. Dude C
4. Dude D
5. New Dude

After much agonizing here's the first pick:

1. David Wright

redsmetz, curious to get your thoughts on Gavin Floyd. He's a bit of a one-hit wonder at the moment. Do you expect big things from him in the future or is this a trade-him-as-soon-as-BA-lists-him-as-a-top-10-prospect pick?

Originally drafted by the Reds in '01 and '02 as a pitcher, we WILL convince Markakis to sign with us as an outfielder by giving him big $$$. (I'll edit my pick to number 11 if DT fixes his #10 pick).

An oversight on my part. I was scanning the draftees on The Baseball Cube and must have not seen the whole list, as I now see significantly better options being named now. I think he might make the list further down (although the damage is done from my pick), but I apparently wasn't seeing everything on how they list the selectees.

Can we assume you're portraying the role of Jim Bowden for this draft's purposes? If so, nicely played. :O)

Ironically, the 2001 draft is the only draft going back to 1995 with no players from it now representing the Reds or their farm system today.

Granted it's a crapshoot, but 1999, 2000, and 2001 were about as bad a three-year stretch of drafting as an organization can have.

Top players:

99 = Ben Broussard
00 = Steve Smitherman, Dustin Mosely
01 = David Shafer

Certainly is hard to do better than that in terms of bats.

My question is how many of them will make the HOF? Ultimately I chose Wright based on my conviction that he's going to Cooperstown.

If Youklis manages to play 7 or 8 more years at a decently high level and wins another championship or two with Boston, I think he's the kinda guy that could sneak into the Hall on the veteran's committee under the "very good player, won lots of titles" exception.

4. Joe Mauer
5. Kevin Youkilis

I think all five have a decent shot at the HOF. Wright and Mauer are on-track for sure. Howard came in late, but a decade's of seasons like his last three puts him in and Teixeira and Youk have outside shots.

I vehemently disagree. David Wright is arguably the closest IMO for now. No one else is that close for me.

But then again, I hold myself to a VERY high regard for the HOF. I don't really fear Teixeira or Howard that much. Those guys strike out too much for my liking. I think you've fallen in to the Yankee hysteria for Tex and Howard is a K machine.

Joe Mauer has a chance if he stays healthy, which I doubt, and it's too early for Youk IMO. Wright is the best player on that list by far.

Let me re-state my hypothesis, then, as I wasn't clear.

If they continue on in their respective careers-- looking at the way the Hall of Fame has operated over the past 30-50 years-- each of those five can make a case for HOF induction after they retire. This assumes, of course, typical career arcs with no catastrophic injuries to said players.

David Wright, as of now, is probably in the Top Ten 3B of all time. He is a true five tool talent who plays in the largest market in the game, a huge advantage to HOF voters. Too, he's on a team that is likely to play for numerous WS titles, another huge advantage. Great numbers, great exposure, great team-- slam dunk choice.

Mark Teixeira has also put up extremely good numbers in his career and is young enough to improve his counting stats to HOF caliber by the time he calls it a day. He's more than halfway there right now and with the short porch in the new Yankee Statdium, he should continue to slug. Also, he's won two Gold Gloves already and is likely to win more, as he too plays in the largest market in the game and is likely to play for many titles in the next ten years or so. (Playing in the AL, where he can DH occasionally is invaluable, IMO, to a candidacy.)

Ryan Howard got started late, but his skill set is not based on speed. If he continues to hit the ball at the rate he's going, he's going to get votes. The trick is if he gets enough at-bats. Right now, he has a pretty good shot at 500 home runs by the time he retires. (Average HOF career retirement-- 38 and change, and Howard already has 180-ish, IIRC.) Plus, he's played on a WS title team in a large market and should continue to play for a good team for a while. (He's also likely to slip over to St. Louis, as that's where he's from, late in his career.) Adding a couple years of AL DH for a slight renaissance and he's HOF material. 15 of the top 25 career K leaders are absolute HOF members and another two or three are borderline candidates. K's indicate a long career, little else.

Joe Mauer has numbers no catcher has ever put up while not on PEDs. His career is the most difficult to judge, as he's been injury-prone, has a troubling injury now, and will probably have to deal with these injuries as he continues to play. But, again, we're assuming health here. Mauer does get extra points for catching (and doing it well). Being able to DH helps him quite a bit, but he doesn't play in a large market, so his teams have to do well. Minnesota looks to be able to do that, by and large. (Too, I'm guessing he goes to another team soon. If he stays at catcher, he's Mickey Cochrane without the alcohol.

Kevin Youklis is the toughest to call. His numbers don't scream HOF and he got started late so his counting stats won't be all that impressive. What is impressive is playing in the post-season six times already in his career and a reputation for clutch. (That in itself got Tony Perez elected, IMO.) He plays in Boston, which has more undeserving players in the Hall than any other team, aside from the Evil Empire. Writers tend to give the benefit of the doubt to team leaders as well, as Youk has that rep as well. I'm guessing he's a 1B, 3B, DH for another fifteen years, too, as his skillset either erodes quickly or stays forever. He keeps in good shape and should stay in Fenway, too, helping his numbers and his candidacy.

I will take the best talent in the draft at #11. Trade him after 2 years in the pro's for whatever I want.

It might have turned out differently, since you're not the Cubs.
