Doug,
What's your read on the way the organization looks at Valiquette right now? Seems like there's not a lot more for him to do at Sarasota? How's he regarded?

Alonso's slowing down.

Only 7 RBI's in his last 11 games and an average of about .287 over that span. Still struggling against Left-handers going 4 for 20. He could use another 100 PA's in Sarasota, not just for his bat, but for his glove. Go through the whole league one time, and then see what happens after they've seen each other and adjustments are made. The next five weeks will be telling, though like you, I think he could hit well right now in the Majors against Right-handers.

They like him, I figure he splits time in Sarasota and Carolina this year. He had an ok year there last year. He still battles consistency and I think thats why he is still in Sarasota.

Remarkably, Reds farm teams started three lefties tonight (Jukich, Louisville; Wood, Carolina; Fairel, Dayton), and all three finished with seven scoreless innings. The collective line: 21 IP 9 H 0 R 4 BB 10 K.

Jerry Gil for Sarasota pitched six innings and allowed two unearned runs. So the system's four starters allowed zero earned runs on the night. It was by far the best start of Gil's season--possibly his life, for that matter.

Wood's walk rate has been down his last couple starts. Good to see.

Edit: Actually his K/BB ratio is better

According to a poster on Doug's site, Wood was throwing in the 87-91 mph range last night and touching 92. Apparently his secondary pitches were sharp too. Over his last three starts, his walks have started to decrease and his strikeouts have increased. In 52 innings this season, Wood has allowed only 36 hits and one home run.

Great night on the farm. The big question -- can Travis Wood hold up over the course of a full season?

Nice little surge from the Dragons lately -- good to see.
