Volquez is back, Burton optioned
Posted by JoshPichler at 6/1/2009 5:17 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com

From the Reds: Today the Reds reinstated from the 15-day disabled list RHP Edinson Volquez (back spasms) and optioned to Class AAA Louisville RHP Jared Burton.

I'm glad to see Fisher is staying up. Hopefully Burton can get things back on track in Louisville.

Burton optioned to Louisville. He took it well. "I'm not pitching like I'm capable of. I'll go down there are work out the kinks."

Burton has demonstrated his effectiveness in the past and doesn't seem to be showing any signs of injury. I had expected a phantom trip to the DL followed by a rehab stint, but this is functionally the same thing.

Hopefully they'll get him turned around down there and he can return to be a second "leverage" arm in the bullpen. He's too good to be throwing this poorly.

well they got it half right. Now DFA Lincoln and promote Maloney to take Owings' next start.

Burton belongs in Triple-A, but I'd still take him over Lincoln. Hopefully Lincoln is gone very soon.

I respect guys who own up to their deficiencies and or short comings. Lord knows I'm not one of them, but its still refreshing.

I'd rather have Abe Lincoln on the mound than Mike

Recently, Lincoln seemed to have his good fastball and curve back. But he seems lacking the command he showed in the first half last year.

It was the right move to send Burton back. At least Lincoln still seems to have his stuff and he has a two-year contract. But the Reds have too many options at AAA for Lincoln to stay if he doesn't improve. So he's got to start getting people out, now.

good move. i want to see more of Fisher.

Lincoln is going to stay & be the mop up guy and the take one for the team guy. at least he will serve a purpose this way: protect the teams other arms.

I dont' think he's a reliable arm to count on right now.....but he's OK with a multiple run lead or deficit for now IMHO. Haven't given up hope on him just yet.

I like guys who own up to their deficiencies. I hope to be like you someday.

Burton's command and velocity has been off, so hopefully he can fix both of those. But a .376 BABIP given a 15.5 LD% doesn't help. His 4.01 FIP shows he's not that far off. I think he'll be back and one of the more effective arms in the pen by late summer.

So who's coming up to replace Burton? And who will replace Volquez once he goes back to the DL?

Almost has to be Maloney. Though knowing the Reds it will be Bailey.

I think this time it will have to be Maloney.

I was thinking the same thing. I'd like to see what Maloney can do.

Can't believe they would go with Bailey again. Has to be Maloney. He has really earned it.

I could see them bringing up a reliever until Volquez's next turn comes up. Then send the reliever down and bring up, hopefully, Maloney.

Edinson's next scheduled start is Saturday against the Chubs. Do the Reds really want to pitch a lefty against those RH bats they have?

Eric Milton shut them down. If he can do it, anyone can. :)

Good point. However, Milton is a veteran and Maloney's a kid. I'm not saying I wouldn't do it but I would think long and hard before I did.

That's my take too. Considering the commitment we have in him financially, it's far to early to give up on him now. He is showing signs of improvement.
There's the adage that you can never have too much pitching.

I remember a few years ago, Weathers got off to an absolute horrible start and the screams to cut him were even louder. He ended up being ok.

Both Lincoln and Burton need some time to work things out. Hopefully they can both be assets later in the season.

Dusty also needs an arm to burn.

Reds have always treated Maloney like they have doubts that he's a prospect. Guys like that get few opportunities. the non-prospects have to succeed when needed, not when they have their best chance to succeed. you can't coddle them.

here's a chance. the rest is up to him.
