Another guy who could be a power arm in the pen. The Reds really are in a good position to create some payflex in 2010 and beyond with Roenicke, Fisher, Viola, Herrera, Stewart, Manuel, Masset, Watson, Ondrusek and hopefully a revitalized Burton making older more expensive guys like Cordero and Weathers expendable in the offseason. That doesn't even consider rotation arms like Ramirez and Thompson who probably will make the pen their home one day soon.

The Reds need to have some good veteran starters and relievers if they are going to compete. Very doubtful they will replace Cordero with a kid. I could see Weathers being replaced by Burton, if Jared is back to his former game. Otherwise, these minor league guys , if they make the club, will have middle innings roles until they prove themselves at the big league level.

Burton's struggles probably push back a transition in the closer role to a young gun. I agree these guys start in the middle and Cordero being gone is by no means an absolute must do. But by the end of 09, it may be apparant that some one is ready. Burton was the most likely candidate, but it seems he's fallen by the wayside. I think Masset should be moved up in the pecking order myself.

I could still see the Reds dealing off Cordero and bringing in a cheaper vet to hold the fort for a year or two or as insurance if a kid fails. I think the lack of being able to make a move last winter due to lack of funds coupled with a number of near ready arms will lead to the team reducing its investment in the pen to free bucks for other spots. I could actually see the Reds bringing back a much cheaper Weathers to close while dealing off Cordero and backfilling the 8th inning with one of these kids. If the Reds don't keep him as a starter, Zach Stewart will be closing before 2010 is over.

I feel like Massett could turn into a closer. He's hard to hit got good primary and secondary stuff. Has been lights out for us since we aquired him. He has that failed started turned closer kick about him. Isringhausen, Nathan, Gagne, Paplebon... His numbers since we picked him up are 24 Games 35.1 Innings 22 Hits 6 Earned Runs 13 BB 26 K's ... ERA or 1.53 ... BA against .172... Sounds closer like to me...

Agreed. He's been nasty. He's got some time to grow into it, and during that time he's going to have to show the ability to avoid walks. That means getting ahead with the fastball. I don't think he's there yet, but short relief is still real new to him.

Not enough strikeouts for my taste as a closer. Ideally I want a closer who strikes out more than 1 guy per inning.
