Fun fact for the night:

The first batter John Smoltz faced in the majors was Lenny Dykstra, July 23, 1988.

Smoltz pitch 8 innings and Bruce Sutter pitched the 9th.

Dragons won 8-4.

Mendez continued his hot hitting with 3 more hits, 2 RBIs, and Stephen Chapman added 3 more hits and 3 RBIs. Rojas, Day, and Means each had 2 hits.

Dragons added 5 stolen bases, Chapman with 2 more and up to 13 total. Sappelt with another one to bring him up to 19 on the year.

Well, just got back from the Mudcats game. Bleh.... All the big hitters looked like crap tonight. Yonder especially was getting fooled on off speed pitches. In the 9th Francisco did hit an oppo field homer that just barely went over fence.

Smit came out with some kind of injury but didn't see him acting like he was in pain or checking on blisters.

The guy that relieved him was that Cochran guy from independent ball. He's got nothing. He mixes slop with junk, and then when you're ready for that he throws some soft stuff.

The manager made a bone-head move in my mind. Down 3-1 in the 6th with 2 out and 2 on, he let the pitcher hit...... WTH?

In the 7th (I think) Medina came in, some scouts, especially one wearing a Ft Myers Miracle hat, was VERY interested in Medina, to the point where he got out of the seat and sat in the aisle to have a good angle shooting him with the gun. Medina didn't get hit hard at all, and looked to have good stuff, but he couldn't find the strike zone.

Who is going to take Maloney's spot in Louisville? I think I have an idea..

Hint: A lefty with a 1.38 ERA is scheduled to throw that day for Carolina

Dragons’ winning streak at 3 games
Dayton scores three runs in the first inning en route to 8-4 victory over South Bend.

DAYTON — Some things you see on and off the baseball field are not expected.

For instance Friday night, June 5, at Fifth Third Field.

First baseman Humberto Sosa took batting practice with the Dragons, despite being told earlier in the day the parent Reds were shipping him to extended spring training. He was the star of Thursday’s game and his .241 batting average was higher than six of his teammates’.

Dragons manager Todd Benzinger was pleased to allow Sosa a final team workout.

Catcher Jake Long, who spent some time with the Dragons last season, is Sosa’s replacement.

Then the Midwest League All-Star game roster was released, and while Dragons pitcher Matt Fairel and catcher Kevin Coddington were obvious inclusions, the failure of second baseman Cody Puckett to make the team voted on by managers seemed odd.

Puckett, hitting .302 with 10 homers and 31 RBIs at game time, is one of the top hitters in the league.

“Puckett should be the A-number-one guy on the team,” Benzinger said. “There are questionable things, then there are travesties. This is a travesty.”

Best of all for the Dragons was a rare three-run first inning, igniting the way to an 8-4 victory over South Bend and a three-game winning streak.

Two Dragons collected three hits — Carlos Mendez and Stephen Chapman — while Andrew Means drove two doubles to left and Miguel Rojas had two hits before exiting with a mildly sprained index finger.

It all backed the pitching of starter Curtis Partch, who allowed two runs in six innings. He allowed five hits in improving to 4-3 with a 5.02 ERA. Scott Gaffney pitched a perfect 11/3 innings for his second save.

Mesoraco's OPS has jumped over 20 points so far today. I don't know about you guys, but I'm nowhere near writing him off as a bust just yet.
