You can say Maloney's fb isn't all that but he rarely has thrown it in the strike zone tonight. Almost always at the neck or eyes, then he comes back at the ankles next pitch with a curve or change.

Gotta say, I am a lot more impressed with Maloney tonite than some of the skeptics on here. He's looked poised to me when he has runners on, is trusting his stuff, and has great arm action on the change.

5 IP: 4 hits 4 Ks 1 BB 1 ER 1 hit batter

Not seeing a lot I hate in that, especially since the Cubs have gone righty heavy against him.

Nice debut, frankly.

Excellent observation. It's more a set-up pitch that has the Cubs baffled so far.

I gotta say any guy who is LH, throws strikes and has a good feel for keeping a guy off balance can play MLB. To what level who knows but as a MR he'd be solid I think at the very least.

Tons of pitchers can get by with a 90 FB. They are literally everywhere in MLB.

Brutus

It is. For me, it's about knowing how to pitch. It's about knowing where to throw the ball and being able to put it there. It's about changing eye levels and changing speeds. Maloney has been able to do that. Even without an overpowering fastball, I still believe he can be a very serviceable major league pitcher.

Confidence. If he were to give up 2 runs or something, he's going to go out not feeling as good about himself.

FCB, don't re-write history. Those of us on the Dickerson to CF bandwagon back in the spring figured he would be a good bet for a .750 - .775 OPS and a really good defensive glove. And that he would be an asset to the team at those levels.

Willy:

.318 / .328 / .646 OPS

Dickerson

.370 / .360 / .730 OPS

And I would argue, thus far, Dickerson has been superb in center whereas Willy has been extremely inconsistent. As I say that, he just made another amazing play in center.

I'm not seeing much of the same player(s).

I'm not sure I understand your point but I'll say this, giving Dickerson a ton of at bats against lefties isn't a great plan.

It would hurt his value considerably.

I'd take him as a full time player if it keeps Willy's 650 vs LHP out of the batter's box.

I think my point was pretty obvious. I was responding to the comment that Willy and Dickerson were basically the same player. There's an 80 point difference in OPS. I'd say that's not exactly the same player.

That's a whole different story, but unlike Taveras (who is OPS'ing .500 against his opposite hand), Dickerson is actually hitting right-handers (.756 OPS).
