I don't know about you guys, but I think Chris Welsh does a bangup job on the Reds televison broadcasts. His quality insight makes it more enjoyable. I feel the same about the Cowboy, but I actually like Welsh a little better.

I like Welsh a lot better than Brantley. He makes statements that make my head want to explode. I have to wrap it in duct tape it he's doing the game.

Off the top of my afore mentioned head, I can think of the last Houston series after Bruce hit his homer. He blamed Bruce’s problems on Dunn and Griffey because “they only cared about hitting the ball out of the park and it’s going to take Bruce some time break from that mindset.” Yeah, Jeff what could Jay learn from a first ballot HOFer, quite possibly two HOFers? Let’s see Jay’s biggest problem has been patience at the plate or learning to take a walk and Brantley blames two guys who have, throughout their careers, shown a high proclivity for getting on base and patience at the plate. Really? If you were forced to pick somebody to blame for Bruce’s problems you wouldn’t start with the free swingin’, self proclaimed leader of this team? And maybe go to the “I don’t like base cloggers” manager next? I mean if you were forced to pick someone to blame. Personally, I don’t blame anyone or anything but Jay’s age for his current struggles.

Welsh is by far the best current Reds media figure. He has outstanding insights, doesn't take himself or the game too seriously, and has developed into a top-class color guy. He also became a lot more camera-friendly when he lost the comical mustache. I hope he's on the Reds television team for a long time, which is more than I can say for his partner and several members of the 700 WLW circus.

I like his work, too.

Brantley really is more of the "cowboy," laying it out bluntly at times; a Don Meredith type of color guy. (Showing my age there...) Welsh just does an all-around good job. You can listen to him and get something out of it if you're a youngster or a seasoned veteran.

I have to say I have grown tired of Chris. I think it is time we get someone else in the booth. George is beyond terrible. I am not sure how the reds can have two totally different people from radio to tv. Marry tells it like it is. George always paints a pretty rainbow. That is why brantley never does a game with George. Someone would get thrown out of the booth via the window.

I hate hearing right down broadway that chris picked up from the cowboy. And I hate hearing CoCo. That does np sound tough. Of course it is just like the pretty rainbow that George and chris love to talk about.

I think you hit the nail on the head here.

Previously when it was only he and George, Chris leaned a little towards homerisms and being a goody two shoes sort. Once Thom came over and was critical, Chris opened up some.

Thom is likely too quick to be critical, and George is too adoring of the golden gods that play the game, but Chris has taken a bit from each and melded it with his own experience as a player and has come out a better announcer as a result.

I couldn't agree more. Welsh is by far the best, and I really enjoy when he and Thom work together. Welsh used to get on my nerves because he acted like George and was so damn goofy. Lately, he's been more insightful and level headed compared to our other color analyst. He criticizes just enough without bashing players the way Marty and the Cowgirl do it.

I think he changes his style depending on who he is working with. If George is his partner he's all sweetness and light. It it's Thom or Marty, he's more critical. I don't know if it's intentional but he does change his style.

Yes...I agree with this completely. It's dead-on.

I actually like the Cowboy, too. Although I prefer when he's paired with Thom. Some of the insights he provides and some of the things he picks up on are very informational. And I like the sillyness too. It's a nice break from the Grande/Welsh combo.

A lot of folks are not comfortable with Brantley's southern "down home" style. I kind of enjoy it, but aside from that, he is very insightful on many technical things, particularly pitching. I enjoy Brantley. It is a nice change of pace when they switch up the Grande/Welsh team with the combination of Thom/Jeff/Chris. It has allowed me to enjoy the broadcasts, much more. I don't dislike George, but he does wear on me after a long period of time. Probably one of the nicest men in all of baseball. I believe that he is very sincere in his convictions and that he truly loves the game of baseball.

About George Grande ... he truly loves the game of baseball.
yeah. I finally figured out that's part of what bothers me. He doesn't seem to care about the reds as much as he cares about the game. I don't want my announcers to be pure homer's, but when the other side hits a home run, I don't want my announcer being all gleeful about how far it went.

I used to hammer George a lot about his overly optimistic style --- but have decided thats the way he is and it isnt going to change and obviously the Reds brass likes it. It does provide a counterbalance to Marty and guess thats ok. As far as George and the "Cowboy", they have, contrary to alexad, have worked together and are ok. Chris Welsh, is a very adequate broadcaster, not too flashy, not terrible. The few times Chris has been in the radio booth; I have been surprised -- he is actually very good with Marty and has done a good job on PBP the few times (usually in spring training) I have heard him.

I have both MLB.tv and XM for audio broadcasts. Our announcers are among the best in the business, George excluded. To be honest, even George is preferable to some PBP guys. Welsh and Brantley are average to above average, and the Brennamans are as good as it gets.

I can count on one hand the teams that I think have better announcers than the Reds: Cardinals, Dodgers and Brewers. Several others have one guy who is good but the rest are sub-par. We have it pretty good here in the Queen City.

My take on the 'crew'

* Welsh: good insight, though sometimes annoying with his hyperbole. I think the guy knows what he's talking about, but he deals too often in absolutes and that's my only real complaint.

* Brantley: also like his commentary. I'm not as high on his opinions as Welsh, but he's an enjoyable personality.

* Thom: love Brenneman as a PBP guy. I think he's a good broadcaster, and he won't try to pretend he knows something if he does not. He's not afraid to admit he's not knowledgeable on something. I respect that. Works hard to have good chemistry with his color guys.

* Grande: I like the guy, but he's very annoying to listen to and quite honestly, I just don't care much for his knowledge of the game. And he and Welsh have become intolerable to listen to when the Reds play the Cardinals or when the Cards (or "Albert") comes up into the topic of conversation. Overall, Grande is by far my least favorite. I like the guy as a person, just do not care for his on-air skills.

I'd like to see "The Fat Cowboy" replaced by Kent Mercker.....permanently. I've learned to tolerate George and have no problem with any of the others. When watching the games on TV I get my audio from wherever Brantley is not.

The team is scrappier. Marty loves scrappy.

I think George has lost it a little bit. He used to be at least aware of what was happeing on the field. Not this year.

I fell asleep between pitches late in last night's game (I really did). I think George did too.

I've grown up with George, and I've met him once and he's a great guy, so I'm a bit partial towards him. But I don't really care to listen to him much anymore either. Give me Thom any day of the week. Did anyone catch George's interview with Leake yesterday via a phone call? That was painful to listen to.

And I like Brantley and his "tell it like it is" style. But other times, he says maybe the most ignorant things I've ever heard, a good example what Razor talked about earlier.

I was thinking the same thing listening to it. It was like he was either ocmpletely caught off guard, or had no idea what to ask a #1 draft pick. It was horrible television and painful to listen to. I wonder what Leake thought of it?

Welsh should get some kind of honor or award for simply working in the same booth with possibly the worst sports broadcaster of all-time for so long, and apparently the real life person Matt Groening based his Ned Flanders' character on. I do like Welsh just fine but unless it's radio I don't pay too much attention, yet can't get away from the limited vocabulary of Grande and his mind-numbing cliches on TV every night, and just plain awful broadcasting all-around.

Only in the Cincinnati market does a bland corporate middle-aged white guy tool like Grande go over so well. I really don't even think he's human underneath the polo shirt and sheen.

Even beyond the goody-two-shoes routine that drives almost every Reds fan crazy... Grande just isn't a good announcer. He says things all the time that make me think he has a low baseball IQ. I know he's been around the game for years and even played college ball at USC, but the guy just says idiotic things all the time. Couple that with his "everything is peaches and cream" announcing style and he is beyond awful.

And I love that he won't say the word "damn" but has no problem shilling for casinos, beer corporations, etc. ... Get off your high-horse. You're too good to say the word damn? When that's the name of the show you are promoting? I can't believe FSN lets him get away with that. They should just have Welsh (or whoever the color man is) read the promo if George has too high of morals to say the terrible word "damn."

One thing I will say about Welsh: Does he make up baseball terms or what? He calls a "slug bunt" a "dookie drag." I've never heard that before in my life and he always uses it. There are other terms as well that he breaks out that I've never heard.

Dookie drag. Hehe.

I previously have listened to xm and heard both Thom, Marty and the Cowboy as the announcers for the Reds. Now that I have MLB TV i have the pleasure of listening to George and Chris. I thought they already killed it and replaced it with a clip show.

As to the topic, I agree with most of the posters here, I think Welsh has become a very good color man. He does take a few digs at Grande's uber-positive approach sometimes, too. A few games back, for instance, he was trying to get Grande to criticize and umpire and George wouldn't do it, and Welsh laughed and said something to the effect that Grande never would.

Yep, Marty used to be a pleasure to listen to.

Now, it's obvious that he can't wait for the game to be over with so he can go home. I honestly don't know why he continues to work the games, he doesn't enjoy it and couldn't possibly need the cash. He's a bitter old man now, holding his stupid grudges against people for years and years.

I agree that Thom and Marty together is almost unbearable. Thom is ok when he's not with "Dad".

I used to not miss a game on radio, but Marty makes it so unpleasant that I only tune in occasionally, and sometimes only for a few innings.
