I've said it before and I'll say it again. A healthy, hitting EE is the key to the Reds season. Votto will put up better numbers, but you can pitch around one hitter. Phillips is putting up solid numbers, Votto has been amazing when in the lineup, but if EE can put up an .850 OPS and knock in 45-50 runs over the remainder of the season, we are in this race. Thoughts?

EE is such an annoying player to watch.

He hits awesomely at times then others he seems to hit nothing but pop flies. If he could even put together a half way consistent year Id be happy.

If the Reds' season hinges on EE, this team is doomed, IMO. His career, so far, has been inconsistent both offensively and defensively. The problem is, there's not a better option available at 3B in the entire system.

Edwin being a very good player, as much as I hate to say it, totally depends on his ability to hit for average. If he hits .300, with his current BB rate and developing power, he turns into a super star.

Every time in his career when hes hes .300 in a month his slugging is nearly .600.

The guy has the tools at the plate, its just getting that average up.

His issue is consistency. He has Dunn like hot streaks and Dunn like cold streaks. Phillips is similar to a certain degree. Ideally, Votto is the consistent force in the lineup while we have Phillips, EE, and Bruce go on their hot/cold streaks. If they can time them correctly, then the offense will be okay.

if it matters also June, July and August have been some of Edwins best months during his career.

Anybody know when he's able to come off the 60-day DL? Otherwise this discussion may be a moot (that's moot, not mute) point.

I agree that EE along with the return of Votto and Volquez are the keys. I have had people disagree with me quite often, but EE is very valuable to this club. He's just 26 and has two seasons of .800+ OPS and a career line of .789.

Awesome! I didn't realize it was super-duper retroactive! I've never been so excited to get EE back in the lineup!

What was the purpose of putting him on the 60-Day DL. I thought when you went on the 60-day that your season was done. So why did we put him on the 60 when he's about to come back? (Or is he coming back any time soon)?

Putting EE on the 60-day DL created a 40-man roster spot for Danny Richar, who was previously not on the 40-man. Edwin was put on the 60-day DL retroactive to April 27 when he was placed on the 15-day DL. This means that he is eligible to come off of the 60-day DL on Saturday, June 27th.

i think EE will come up hot when he comes back to the big club.... meaning Walt will have to look for a power bat rather at SS or LF/CF in order to win the division

His offensive numbers improve every year

Why do people have such a hate for EE

I think people give him a hard time because he isn't the greatest fielding third baseman in the world and they expect him to hit .300 with 30 home runs and 90 RBIs every year. The guy is at best a .280 hitter and will hit 20-25 home runs with 75-80 RBIs. He is slowly getting better at third but I think once the throwing errors stop and some of the bad at-bats go away: he will be loved by the fans.

It is impossible to say that EE is not an upgrade offensively over who has been playing 3B while EE has been on the DL. Here are the numbers for our third basemen other than EE this season:

These guys have put together a line of .203/.271/.297 for an OPS of .568

Compare these numbers with EE's career .261/.343/.445 for an OPS of .789

As much as people might rag on EE for a "lack of emotion" or a "lack of hustle" he gets the job done better than our current third basemen.

Without a doubt. At the very least, he'll offer an .800 OPS the rest of the season as a Right-Handed batter and play much, much better defense at 3rd Base than Jerry Hairston. I'd take a .770 OPS the rest of the season from him. There just aren't very many 3rd Baseman doing better than .770 OPS in the NL or on the Cincinnati REDS. Hairston is at .704, Rosales is at .576. Alex Gonzalez is at .559.

Willy Taveras is at .552. Dickerson is at .775. Who should be playing full-time there? Taveras is a joke.

Anyway, Hairston's lifetime OPS is .700, so his .704 this season is exactly what he should be doing. There's no reason to expect him to do any better.

EE, on the other hand, has a .789 OPS, so there's every reason to expect him to at least be at .789, which would instantly make him the #2 Right-handed bat on the team behind Phillips' .852.

It's a no-brainer. EE gets back to the team, the team instantly gets better.

It would also be instantly better if Taveras had a season-ending injury.

Why don't these injuries happen to the people who need to have them.

REDS' fans are weird, at least on this web-site it seems. So many will complain and complain about Phillips and EE, and don't give them the praise they deserve, when they are the two best right-handed players on the team.

Change that a little. He's one of the best fielding 3rd basemen in the league. It's the throws over to 1st base that occasionally get away from him that gets those who hate on him to do so undeservedly.

2nd best OPS of any right-hander on this team and stellar defensive play for the most part, except for those occaisional throws that get away.

There are no better prospects out there for the REDS at 3rd until Neftali Soto or Todd Frazier takes over full-time. That new contract that they signed EE to was perfect.

It is a mystery to me. It amazes me the guys who seem to get the ill will of the fans. I really think it comes down to the fact that he just doesn't smile enough or look upset enough when he fails. Sad to think that is a reality but I hear so many fans say that EE just doesn't care. Until last year the guys been among the most clutch players on a team full of guys who can't seem to get a hit when you need it. The level of critcsm doesn't seem to match the level of production. Aaron Harang shows almost no emotion and he is stoic, EE shows no emotion and he doesn't care. Just my observation.

His 2nd full season as a starter and he was 2nd in the entire National League hitting with RISP at .360. 2nd in the entire NL! That's unreal.

What did he do yesterday? 3-run bomb with 2 outs.
