View Full Version : 6/27/09 Reds vs Tribe

Red in Chicago

Here is the correct lineup. Sorry about the prior error. Thanks Mth

Dickerson 8
Hairston Jr. 5
Votto 3
Phillips 4
Nix 7
Gomes DH
Bruce 9
Hanigan 2
Janish 6

(Bailey 1)

Votto and Phillips flop spots from the last two games; RHP Toma Ohka (0-1, 4.70) throws for the Tribe tonight at 7:05 here in Cleveland. Nix and Hanigan in, Taveras out, Hernandez getting a rest.

Gomes bounces to short. Typical Reds rally. Pitcher can't throw strikes, loads the bases and we can't score. We may get more than 3 hits, but when you blow opportunities like that, you understand why this team cannot score.

They were close. I really do not like this umpire.

Dickerson muffs the ball, but gets a force at second when the Indians got mixed up on whether or not it was a catch. Bad call. Where did they get these umpires?

Homer strikes out Choo to get off on only a walk and two very hard hit outs. Interesting inning. Phillips gets hit twice and the umpire misses the first one, refuses to let him take the base on the second claiming he stepped into the ball, then in the bottom of the first, we get the blown Dickerson call. We're in for a long night.

K for Bailey ends inning. Set up Choo for the fastball, then threw it by him.

Caveat Emperor
06-27-2009, 08:34 PM
That sequence to Choo -- splitter down, splitter down, fastball up for the K -- is the kind of pitching I've been waiting to see from Bailey.

He blew a .300 hitting Choo away in that AB.

Dickerson doubles. That may be the best at bat I've seen from Dickerson this year. He was behind in the count, fouled some off, took one just off the plate, and then hit a rocket RBI double.

This guys is impressing me more and more as the season progresses.

Caveat Emperor

There's really no debate at this point -- Dickerson is the better defender and better hitter. He gets on base and has the speed to be annoying on the basepathes. He should be the everyday CF for this team.

That's a tough pitch to score from 3rd on -- it hung up in the air forever to allow Choo to position himself to catch the ball moving toward the plate. He had time to bobble the ball AND make the throw to get Hairston.

Not a good decision to send the runner there, IMO -- especially given how bad Tomo had been looking that inning.

WVRedsFan

Really, watching the game, Bailey has been squeezed on a LOT of these pitches. He's right on the zone, just a hair off on a lot of these.

I'm by no means a Bailey apologist, but his fastball looks a lot better in this start than I've seen in a while. 95 MPH right on the corners.

I'm not watching the game but does Homer "look" any different? Seems like he is generating a lot of fly balls, walks, and struggling to finish off hitters. All of which has been his problem all along.

Edit: Saw Caveat's post which answers my question. It would be nice to see Homer adjust to the strike zone, though.

The results may not be there, per se, but this is a different looking Homer, IMO.

I would think that he deserves more than 3 innings to prove himself.

Especially when he's leading 5-1, and has only given up 1 hit which should have been an easy out (probably a DP). The only run against him should be unearned.

Everybody acts like its 'just Homer' on all the walks. It's not. I mentioned earlier that he was getting squeezed according to Gameday, and I stand by that.

Tonight's home plate ump is Tim McClelland. He has the highest average number of runs scored per game of anyone who has been behind the plate more than 7 times. (Average of 12.38 runs scored per game over 16 games umped this season.). McClelland also has one of the lowest number of strikeouts per walk given (1.6). In short, he is a not a pitcher's ump. (Stats from http://www.vegasinsider.com/mlb/stats/umpire-report/ )

Homer needs to just hang in there.....

The ump is doing Homer no favors, but Homer is sure not helping himself either.

At some point, a pitcher has to modify his approach a little when he doesn't get those corner calls. The definition of 'insanity' is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

I thought his breaking stuff looked sharp, velocity was good, unfortunately he just has a hard time locating his fastball. Even with a generous umpire he still would have walked four or five.

For all the grief Walt gets about signing Willy T for 2 yrs. Nix and Gomes have been nice additions to this team.

I was hoping before the game started that Homer would go 7 innings. Looks like he fell two short of my goal for him. Grading him on a curve I will give him a C for tonight's performance.

I'd give him a C-. If the bullpen can hold on, Homer will get the 'W'. Even though 'wins' as a stat are not solely within the pitcher's control, you have to admit that at least Homer didn't get hit hard tonight. He only gave up three hits, and shaved two full runs off his ERA. (LOL). He made it through five innings, and kept the Reds in the game by only giving up three runs despite 7 walks. He never gave in and grooved one for a HR either.

But I also still have hope. If he gets a little better control, has a team that swings more often, and has an ump that gives him the corners, he could still be very good. The Indians have two batters that are in the top 3 in the AL in OBP. They have four starters tonight with OBPs above .380. The Indians are 4th in the AL in walks and OBP.

Thoughts from the broadcast...

1) Anyone notice FSN portaying Bailey as Papelbon-esque before he came to the plate.

2) I'd kill to have Manning from the Tribe broadcast do the Reds games...brutal honesty, great analysis...I can't imagine GG/CW conceding that the Reds were out of the race at this point in the season. Ever.

Are you saying that you agree that the Reds are out of the race at this point of the season?

~edit~ Oh, nevermind. You're saying that the Indians broadcaster said that the Indians are out of it at this time. Sorry, misunderstood.

No, I hope I didn't come across that way at all...I just found it enlightening to hear a homer broadcaster telling it how it is (Cleveland is out of the race) ...

I'm glad they didn't have a microphone on Bailey during the game. In the first ending he dropped the F-bomb a good five to six times. Then he had GD going on a couple of times.

I saw the last inning of Bailey's outing, but from what I am reading, McClelland was reinforcing his status as most overrated and frustrating umpire in MLB. His delayed hand signals are all about "hey, look at me, I'm the umpire and I'm in control of this game."

I know this strays a little from the thread, but Fox had a mike that picked up the ump at second in a play in the Cubs Chisox game. A White Sox runner was called out after his foot slid off the bag in a steal. The shortstop kept his glove on him and the ump saw it plain as day. The runner lamely made some comment asking about his foot sliding off and getting called on that. The ump responded he wasn't out there to overlook something like that.

McClelland definitely had a small strike zone. It reminded me of the strike zone of 15 years ago. Homer is probably the worst guy we could throw in that situation but to his credit he persevered. He does need to throw more strikes in the big leagues. McClelland aside, I think the strike zones are smaller at this level and the hitters tend to lay off more bad pitches. Let's see if Homer can adjust.

I was pleased to see a 98 MPH FB from him. I'd only heard of such a thing from him. They didn't center too many of his pitches. Seems like they finally gave him the OK to go back to 4 seamers.

I will be excited for when Homer isn't called up to face the Indians in mid-June. That seems to be his lot in life.

Got it under his belt, he perservered, he and the team move on. He said all the right things, and, actually, he was right. The important thing was the team won. They need to stick with him for awhile and see if he can make some strides at the majors this time around.

I think it's because the name "Coco" evokes images of an exotic dancer, much like "Jasmine", "Destiny", and "Mystique". And who really wants an image of Francisco Cordero associated with that?!

It seems to me there are more legitimate Cocos out there, including the inimitable Coco Crisp (fortified with vitamins!).

Calling Francisco Cordero "Coco" is kind of a stretch. Might as well call him Frodo or Costco.
