Good job of getting out of the jam, he should pitch like that to all the Cards.

Reds made an aggressive baserunning play that didn't work out. Not such a big deal. Main thing is they got out in front with Dickerson and a good bunt play by Taveras.

Shame WT doesn't learn to hit the ball on the ground more often. That bunt play would never have worked with a slower runner. Infielders get all messed up rushing throws to get Taveras. He just needs to give himself more opportunities to use his speed rather than Ks and popups.

This next inning for Bailey is very important IMO. To go through the Card's 3-4-5 hitters without a blemish and he could have enough confidence to pitch a dandy.

Love his stuff, accuracy (at least mostly) and especially his composure. Definitely the best I've seen him look as well. Let's hope he keeps it up. I think he has finally turned the corner, but he has a long way to go before he proves that. Man this is encouraging though.

Wow. Homer really fooled Ludwick with the split.

It's interesting to me that he learned the pitch from Lehr while in AAA. Not a pitching coach, but one of his teammates. (That actually happens a lot, but it's still interesting.) It's really become a weapon for Homer -- one that he never had before.

07-03-2009, 09:09 PM
He's actually created some of that good fortune also.

Agree, but he's gotten Pujols twice. Once when he was trying to call time and wasn't ready to hit and another on a diving catch of a shot by Hairston. He's had a couple balls caught against the wall. He's given up more fly balls than I would expect for a guy with a splitter. He's absolutely better now than when the game started and his last time out.

Tony Cloninger
07-03-2009, 09:11 PM
If Votto is first pitch swinging then that must be the game plan with this guy...at least Phillips took a pitch.

Even with Bailey throwing strikes....the Cardinals hitters have still taken pitches. Maybe that is beacuse of Bailey's control issues prior to this game...or maybe it's just the fact that STL hitters know how to work a pitcher.

Homer does sure look sharp tonight. As my signature shows, I'm there...

But, in all fairness, I have to point out that tonight's ump is a pitcher's ump.

Umpire Fielden Culbreth has been behind home plate 14 times before tonight. Games that he umps average 7.71 runs total per game. His K/BB rate is 1.7. Stats from The Umpire Report (http://www.vegasinsider.com/mlb/stats/umpire-report/). He is a pitcher's ump.

Last Saturday, Bailey was squeezed by the ump. Saturday's home plate ump was Tim McClelland. He has the highest average number of runs scored per game of anyone who has been behind the plate more than 7 times. (Average of 12.38 runs scored per game over 16 games umped this season.).

It's not just Ks and BBs either. When the pitcher gets the corner calls, it makes hitters have to swing and put those borderline pitches into play. When batters get the corners, they will be able to force pitchers to throw 'right down broadway' and then get meaty pitches to hit.

So as much as I'm happy that Bailey has no thrown 5 scoreless innings, I think we have to allow that part of the difference is who the ump is tonight.

Homer clearly has the stuff to compete up here. This is the first time I've seen him have velocity, movement, and control. He just needs reps from this point forward so he can hone his control and develop consistency.

If I were the Reds, I'd be willing to eat some (or all) of Arroyo's salary to send him somewhere that would give me a decent prospect in return once Volquez shows he's healthy.

I need to step in here and give credit to Homer. I have ragged on him as much as anyone, but I must admit that tonight he has looked good against a decent Cards team.

If Homer develops any kind of consistency over several starts, I will lead the line to eat my share of humble pie.

So I kinda got distracted and wasn't really watching this game after the six, and am pretty angry about what went down. Anybody else remember Pujols taking Weathers yard multiple times in the past? How in the hell does Dusty put Stormy in to face him? It's ASKING for a Grand Slam. I'm glad we've tied it up but geez.

In fact, I just checked the stats and Pujols had 9 hits in 18 bats against Weathers. 50/50 is NOT a good gamble in that situation.
