The Toronto Blue Jays have given their troubled former closer B.J. Ryan an unconditional release.

Ryan, 33, has appeared in 25 games this season and has posted a 1-1 record with two saves and a brutal ERA of 6.53. The 6-foot-5 left hander was on the disabled list this season from April 23 to May 15 with a left trapezius tightness. He never regained his velocity or control when he returned.

The Jays have also activated their new closer, Scott Downs, from the 15-day disabled list. Down was placed on the DL on June 18 with a left great toe sprain.

In 26 games this season the left-hander is 1-0 with eight saves and a 1.98 ERA.
