If Lecure and Wood are back in the rotation it seems like somebody has to go.

Alexander Smit started and pitched a hitless inning for the GCL Reds today, which lost in 16, 5-4. Three hits for Henry and three more for Cristobal Rodriguez.

Four more terrific innings from Nathan Driessen. Four good ones also from Jeremy Ware, who now has 21 K and 2 BB in 22 IP. He's 6-foot-6 and just turned 22, pitched at Arkansas State. Gotta think he'd be moved up somewhere before the summer is out . . . Well (edit), I guess he goes by Chase Ware, Chase being his middle name. The Reds signed an undrafted pitcher by that name, but he was listed out of Ole Miss. The team bio has him from Ark. State.

Sorry for the off-topic, but does anybody know why OnBaseMachine hasn't been posting lately? It's not quite the same without him.

I can only speculate but all the losing might have something to do with it. You can only take it for so long before you have to take a break from Baseball alltogether and OBM expressed that sentiment quite often this season.

Why is Alexander Smit pitching in the GCL?

I did that very thing for a couple of years. Luckily, I can invest more in my home town team than Cincinnati and feel pretty good most of the time. But the Reds are still depressing.

BTW, the Bats now have the best record in the IL.

I recall you saying (I think it was you) that the Bats' defense was atrocious early in the year. Has it gotten better? If so, by virtue of whom? I presume their forward march has been accomplished mostly by pitching. Nobody in the lineup is putting up huge numbers (even Heisey, if you isolate AAA). But that staff is pretty impressive, especially with Wood now joining it.

On an individual level, who do you view as Louisville's MVP so far? And do you think Kevin Barker has any potential value as a LH bat off the bench in Cincinnati?

Smit is on the DL

GOYA

Yes, the defense is much better and I credit Sweet. He basically put his foot down and said enough is enough. Errors have been lowered across the board since. I can't say for sure if there's been extra practice or what but I would have to guess that there has been.

On pitching v offense, I'd have to give pitching more credit. The offense has been there a few times to pick up when pitching has faltered but more often, it has been the other way around.

MVP is a tough question. For me, it's between Stubbs, Lehr and Barker. I have a problem giving MVP to a starting pitcher, especially one that hasn't been with the team the whole season. Stubbs has been superior defensively and with baserunning. He has had good times and bad times at the plate but overall has been good. Not great, but good. Barker started the season slow. Since he's picked it up, the one word to describe him is Votto. If he started the season the way he's been playing for the last two months or so, there would be no question that he is the MVP.

If I have to choose a guy, it would probably be Stubbs by a hair at this point. But if Barker continues like he is now, at the end of the season it will be Barker, no question.

Could the Reds use Barker? Not if Votto is healthy. He could make a good DH or pinch hitter but that's not what the Reds need. They need an impact everyday guy. That's not Barker. It might be Stubbs or Heisey soon though.
