In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pirates PH Lee Lacy, who was on 1B after a single, broke for second on a pitch that was called Ball 4 to Omar Moreno. He thought he was caught stealing, so he left the bag and walked toward the Pirates dugout, whereupon Dave Concepcion tagged him out. Pirates manager Chuck Tanner argued for over half an hour, and eventually played the game under protest.
