Not to sound like a stalker but Fay says no move announced yet but Sutton is there.

Drew Sutton is here, something brewing?
Posted by JohnFay at 7/27/2009 3:52 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com

Drew Sutton is here. The Reds haven't announced a move. But I assume that Chris Dickerson is going on the DL. Right now, Jonny Gomes, Laynce Nix and Willy Taveras are the only healthy true outfielders on the roster. Jerry Hairston Jr. can play there, too, as can Sutton.

Bob Castellini is on a conference call with the top baseball people. I hope to talk to him later. You've got to think the Reds are listening offers form the few high-priced veterans they have. If Castellini's involved, that means money is being discussed.

From the Reds:

Today the Reds placed on the 15-day disabled list OF Chris Dickerson (bruised right rotator cuff) and RHP Micah Owings (tight right shoulder). IF Drew Sutton (#27) and RHP Robert Manuel (#60) were recalled from Class AAA Louisville.

Reds outfield: Taveras, Gomes, Nix, Hairston and Sutton

With those being the options I hope they play the best defensive guys.

Well they could also run Votto out there.

Will Castellini stop claiming he wants to 'win now' or whatever?

Needed a starter, bring up a light throwing RHer.

Needed and OFer and you have TWO excellent prospects in AAA and instead you bring up a light hitting Middle IFer.

Yes this season is over, I realize that, but c'mon. This borders on insulting the intelligence of the fans.

If say he was looking to trade Stubbs or Heisey, is there an advantage to not calling them up? Say because they aren't on the Reds 40 man, they wouldn't have to go onto the acquiring teams' 40 man either?

Agreed.

But if this is the OF for the entire homestand, then I get angry.

I'll be patient until the deadline. Ok, maybe not that long.

I'm done being patient. The Reds it seems are being nothing but patients.

Just my guess, but either Stubbs or Heisey gets called up immediately following the deadline. We'll see.

So what's the pitching rotation? Does Masset start now?

The Reds don't need a starter until Friday. I'm sure that Manuel will go back down then to make room for Maloney (or maybe Lehr). Until then, why not use the spot for an extra reliever?

As for the OF, Hoosier Red mentioned a reason why the Reds may have held off on adding Stubbs or Heisey.

Time for the return of Homer Bailey!

Oh wait, he's already here.

I'd guess its for tonight, then Maloney for Manuel tomorrow.

I called half of this. I got the Sutton part right but I had Maloney as the pitcher. Massett starting?

Sounds like another move will be made Friday to bring up a starter.

OK, the Reds now have eight players on the 15-day DL:

Jared Burton
Mike Lincoln
Micah Owings
Edinson Volquez
Ramon Hernandez
Danny Richar
Jay Bruce
Chris Dickerson

A ninth player, Wilkin Castillo is on the 60-day DL and therefore does not count toward the 40-man roster.

Additionally, three players on the 40-man roster are currently on the minor-league DL:

Bill Bray
Daryl Thompson
Yonder Alonso

This means that there are now only four active players in the minor leagues who are currently on the 40-man roster:

Sam LeCure (AAA)
Matt Maloney (AAA)
Ramon Ramirez (AAA)
Juan Francisco (AA)

The Reds do have a little bit of wiggle room on the 40-man roster, as Lincoln and Richar could both be transferred to the 60-day DL, and thus be removed from the 40-man roster.

Sounds like there is a clear candidate for the 60 day DL is necessary

Richar surgery
Posted by TomGroeschen at 7/28/2009 3:05 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com

Reds INF Danny Richar today had season-ending surgery to repair the torn posterior labrum in his left shoulder (Dr. Tim Kremchek). Since July 3 Richar has been on the DL with the injury, suffered July 2 vs. Arizona while sliding head first into h ome plate.

Richar is expected to fully recover by spring training, the Reds said. In seven games this year, Richar was 2-for-8 (.250) with no homers and no RBI.

This is from Fay's blog about whether Stubbs or Heisey was considered to be brought up as well as an update on Burton:

Jared Burton's blood work all came back fine.

"I had asthma when I younger," he said. "They think it resurfaced. I've got some inhaler meds. I think that will help. My shoulder feels better after a couple days off. Hopefully, I can work to get my body stronger to take the pressure off my shoulder."

Burton was put on the disabled list Saturday after complaining of shortness of breath.

Also, I forgot to post this earlier but I asked Dusty Baker if Drew Stubbs and Chris Heisey were considered for Chris Dickerson's roster spot.

"Yeah," he said. "But they need to play."

Meaning, right now, the time in the outfield is going to go Laynce Nix, Jonny Gomes, Willy Taveras and Jerry Hairston Jr.

Stubbs numbers aren't all that good. He is hitting .268/.360/.366 with three homers, 37 steals and 31 RBI at Louisville. He’s struck out 84 times in 328 at-bats and has hit .200 over his last 10 games.

“Maybe they don’t want to expose him,” an American League scout said. “As long as he’s in the minors, he’s a prospect.”

Heisey is having the better year than Stubbs.

He has combined to hit .339/.407/.553 with 16 homers, 16 steals and 56 RBI in 96 games at Double-A and Triple-A.

From Mark Sheldon.

In other news, Chris Dickerson is doing well with his slightly separated shoulder and expected to be ready to come off of the DL when eligible on Aug. 11.

Yes, it's in AAA, but if Stubbs' 268/.360/.366 "aren't all that good", then what in the world do you call .277/.323/.330? Answer? Our starting CF and leadoff hitter. We might be worried about exposing a prospect, but we have no problem whatsoever exposing a "proven veteran".
