View Full Version : Would you trade Votto in a deal for Adrian Gonzalez?

Watching Gonzalez hit anything thrown and watching votto looking of late as not Enthused at the plate, would you ask San Deigo if they would take Votto, Travis Wood and another prospect for Adrian Gonzalez?

Just curious as i think he would hit 50 Homers at GABP.

If he could hit 50 HR's at the GAB does that mean he'd hit 80 or so because he'd probably hit 30 on the road.

Kelly Leak was pretty enthused when he played, he'd swing at balls out of the zone and even catch flies in RF.

Sure, this thread is ridiculous, but I've begun to think Votto's going to be well out of the Reds' price range by the time they might be competitive again.

So--would you try to lock him up now or next season? Or would you entertain trading him?

I've thought about approaching him this offseason to see how he would react to the idea of moving to LF. It might be worth dangling a Longoria/HanRam type extension in front of him if it helped sway his thoughts. Designating him a "Captain" may be another lever to pull with regards to his "voluntary" move to LF.

See what it would take. Hope he wants security.

Is he enough of a building block to pay for 3-5 seasons? The Reds, even in the sunniest forecast, aren't likely to be good for at least three, maybe four, seasons employing the do-nothing and hope the farm helps method they're currently operating under. Will it have been worth it?

Folks have argued that Phillips is the trading chip of choice. Wouldn't Votto be even more of one?

No. I disagree with your 4-5 year forecast. A million things can change during that time. If status quo is maintained, they probably won't be contending next year. After that is anyone's guess.

Phillips is worth considering trading because he makes a lot in the next two years and is a FA after that. Still I'd hang onto him.

Votto makes less sense to trade because he is not expensive for at least three years, and under team control for five. Plus, where BP sometimes has clashes, Votto has Captain written all over him. He ain't going anywhere.

I'm not against trading Votto at all. You're right, he'd probably bring in a good haul.

I'm not against going LTC at all. If he can be had for a Brian McCann type contract along with all he can eat Poutine.

I'm not thrilled going year to year with Votto at all. That's where guys can get expensive really fast. If he doesn't get more expensive that way, it means he failed.

If Walt is considering unloading every trade chip he has (because that's what it would take if you saw the reports of the Dodgers/Padres slobberknocker proposal) to acquire a guy based on a couple dozen bad ABs by Votto, he might need to change his address to somewhere in "the Villages."

I'd love to have Gonzalez, but I'm not convinced he'll outproduce Votto over the next 3-4 years -- and Votto will certainly be cheaper. Plus, our best offensive prospect is a 1B. If you're going to trade Votto, it should be to fill LF or SS. Now, a trade including Alonso for Gonzalez (Alonso, Stubbs, Bailey), with Votto shifting to the OF is something I could definitely get behind.
