View Full Version : Beltre has a nutty injury

Mariners placed 3B Adrian Beltre on the 15-day disabled list with an injured testicle.

Cue the laugh track. Beltre, who doesn't wear a protective cup, had a ball clip him in the groin during Wednesday's game. There was some tearing and internal bleeding. The team is waiting to see if he will require surgery. With surgery, he would be out a month. Without, roughly two weeks. Beltre's certainly been snake-bit in his free agent season.

It hurts just reading about that injury.

He's a "nut" for not wearing a cup. Especially when you are an infielder.

I guess soft hands didn't help his injury.

This might have been a good time to envoke HIPA rights.

Do a lot of ML infielders go without cups? That just seems insane to me--especially at the hot corner.

They got that right.

No way, no how do I step onto a major league field without a cup. Especially after reading this. :runawaycr

No way I step onto a softball field without a cup....

Beltre is a warrior though. Just don't count on any little warriors in the near future.

I definitely like Beltre, he's one tough hombre. I'm gonna go watch the "incident" right now on MLB.tv. What inning did it happen in? I bought the package specifically to watch the Mariners but I didn't watch Wednesday's game. Why I want to see it, I don't know, but I'm just curious.

If it wasn't invoked for Kaz Matsui's anal fissure (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080314&content_id=2427161&vkey=spt2008news&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou), it never will be.

It’s a delicate issue regarding a delicate area. The punch lines are infinite, but it’s not funny when a guy gets hit in his testicles and he’s not covered by the triangular hard-shell plastic designed to protect a man’s private parts.

It’s a topic in the Red Sox spring camp of 2010 because new third baseman Adrian Beltre doesn’t wear a cup and was seriously injured last summer when a ground ball took a bad hop and crushed Beltre in the right testicle.

Beltre went on the 15-day disabled list after the bad hop to the crotch. In his first game back, Griffey got the Seattle game presentation folks to play Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite’’ when Beltre stepped into the batter’s box at Safeco Field.

This is baseball, people. Nothing is sacred. And everybody’s a comedian.

“I never wore one again until last year after I got hit. It was the first time I was hit. They say I’m crazy not to wear the cup. But I say, if the ball’s going to hit me there every 11 1/2 years, I’ll take my chances.’’

But playing third base, commando style? Reminds me of the late Ricky Nelson singing, “Fools rush in where wise men never go.’’

Lowell underwent testicular cancer surgery in 1999 and is president of a foundation that aids cancer treatments. Still, he can’t discuss the cup topic without making a joke.

“You could saw my cup in half and it would still work,’’ said the veteran.

“You could saw my cup in half and it would still work,’’ said the veteran.

I remember when John Kruk returned from testicular cancer surgery, he wore a t-shirt that said, "If you don't like it, I'll take my ball and go home."

Carl Crawford joins the club:

"You couldn't hit it in a better spot. It just took the wind out of me," Crawford said.

I can think of about 1,000 "better spots" to be hit. ;)

Yeah, I heard about this. How stupid do you have to be to not wear a cup in professional sports???

And I say, that's still one time in 11 1/2 years too many.

Someone finally figured out how to keep Crawford from stealing his way around the bases.

After reading this, I don't step anywhere without a cup. Granted the workday will be a little more uncomfortable, but at least I know I'm protected from collapsing desks and other such dangers.

I play the outfield in slow pitch softball and I wear a cup. They're really not that big of a deal. Why risk it?

Ouch (http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/07/21/carl-crawfords-injury-on-fluke-play-is-mans-worst-nightmare/)

Tampa Bay called Crawford's injury a "testicular contusion."

I'm way late to the party here, but did anyone catch this excerpt from that article:

The Astros' original official diagnosis of Matsui's issue was hemmorhoids, but that was changed when a vocabulary mixup caused some anxiety with Matsui's family in Japan. That prompted the club to change the official diagnosis to a more specific term.

"The word [hemmorhoids] carries a negative connotation in Japan," Wade said. "That's why we had to go back and readjust it to anal fissure. It translates into a word in Japan that has a different meaning. That's why we flipped it over to the more graphic actual problem."

Totally hilarious. I wonder what Japanese word for "anal fissure" could possibly carry a positive connotation?

I think bad, bad stuff when I think anal fissure. I'm going to post this against my better judgement, but I wonder if Matsui recieved his anal fissure from Kaz Tadano? (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1720362)

I don't post on Redszone without wearing a cup. Especially when I start talking about FIP, Dusty Baker, or UZR.
