Rockies DFA Matt Murton
By Drew Silva [August 26, 2009 at 6:22pm CST]

According to Doug Miller of MLB.com, the Rockies have designated outfielder Matt Murton for assignment.

The move clears roster space for Juan Rincon, who was activated from the disabled list Wednesday and will add depth to the Rockies' bullpen. Murton, 27, hit .267/.327/.444 in 45 at-bats with the Rockies earlier this season and had a .321 average with 71 RBI for Triple-A Colorado Springs. With those kind of numbers, he's sure to draw interest from opposing ball clubs.

Always liked him. Not sure why he fell out of favor with so many teams.

He's better than a few guys on the roster right now.

He's like an older Wladimir Balentien who never quite lived up to the hype. The Reds should sign him!

Murton is the classic 4th OF type. Not enough glove for CF. Not enough bat for the corners. I'd be interested in him as a bat off the bench, but his ceiling at this point is the RH half of a platoon and Gomes fills that void for us already.

Clearly anyone DFA'd by other MLB teams should immediately be considered to be added to the roster.

I don't like him better than Gomes or Dickerson. Nothing to see here.

I look forward to the days when this kind of news brings a yawn from Rzers.

The Reds should be all over Murton, a cheap player who can both hit and field.

He's an above average bat (wOBA=.340ish) and a plus defender on the corners (+5 or a tick more).

I look forward to the days when guys like this are how the Reds FO defines gritty.

Well if he's gritty I take back my point. But is he grittier than Jonny?

This is one dumpster dive I can get behind.

Technically I think a player has to be able to use a glove in order to be considered gritty.

I thought that was for scrappy; I may have my gritty and scrappy confused.

What about Gomes for Murton +PTBNL?

What about Gomes for Murton +PTBNL?

I don't think the Reds are gaining anything on the whole by that. They're gaining a better fielder but losing some power.

Maybe we can just platoon every position on the field? :D

Pass the Reds have enough of these types. Think Transformers, not Gobots.

Matt Murton is a very useful 4th or 5th outfielder on most teams, which means he'd actually be about the 2nd or 3rd best outfielder for the Reds right now, and he's about 8th or 9th on the Rockies depth chart, hence the DFA.
