I think it's gonna make it more fun, and interesting.

I think that you're right that it will be more fun and interesting.

But will we ever survive not getting those nine to eleven auto wins from the Ohio State scrimmage schedule every year. I guess we will have to devise a system based on how many field goals OSU can make then adjust it for the pt spread.

I don't really understand or follow point spreads very well so I'll probably just be watching as you guys go through things with the bowl games. Thanks again for all the work you did this season GAC. :)

Well GAC and et el will just have to make a bit more effort so you and other's do understand. Seems to me it is just one more thought to selecting. We just have to guess if the team we select will win or lose by X amount within some safe range. So far I think I get it but still missing them.

Besides you have to stick around to keep GAC humble. Last year he was tossing down the chicken images, this year he was sweating chickens.

WEEK 13 SCHEDULE
9-3 .750

Testing with the pt spread
1-5 .167

Picking the winning team is obviously much different from picking the pt spread. .750 vs. .167

You ought to play it just, if nothing else, to gain some experience Heather.

Remember.... it's just for fun anyway. And if you have any questions ask. Myself, or anyone, will be more then happy to help you out.

You'll find it's real EASY to understand point spreads.

The HARD part is picking the winner. But it is a challenge.

Obviously there was no change/movement in the BIG TEN standings because nobody was stupid enough to pick Illinois. But there was some shuffling in GAC'S FIVE. The games that got a majority of everyone were Pitt-WV, Temple-Ohio, and Georgia-Georgia Tech (don't think anyone picked Georgia).

Nobody went perfect. kaldaniels came the closest, going 10-1. A couple went 9-2 and 8-3 (including Spring~Fields); but a lot of 7-4's.

I might try it out during the bowl season but I can't promise anything. My main reason for not wanting to originally wasn't just because I don't follow spreads very well, but also because the holidays are insanely busy for me and I may not have much available time. I didn't realize me not playing was that big of a deal but for you guys, I'll see what I can do, LOL :p:

Fingers: Hello, toes are you there?
Toes: Yes, I am here
Fingers: I am trying to get a feel for something. So how do you get 10-1, 9-2, 8-3 when there was twelve games?
Toes: Well I was just walking around here trying to figure that out myself
Fingers: Well it must be an eyes and brain thing! You know that they never listen to us until we get out the hammer or start kicking the bed post around.
Toes: Maybe the big guy tossed out a game and we missed the count? I didn't stumble across any changes did you?
Fingers: Perhaps we missed the memo? maybe I dropped it, it won't be the first time I dropped something.

You mean that you counted that beating against Cincinnati as a Big Ten game? I watched that game, I love that UC offense and type of play. I hope that coach stays there. They know how to execute diversity in plays.

I was thinking that too when I made my choice, I bolded Florida but truly want Alabama to win. It had nothing to do with Ohio State getting beat by them, I guess it is some holdover from when Bear Bryant was there in the old subconscious mind. :bang: When are they coming out with new hardrives and programming for humans? Heather thinks Illinois won't want to lose their last home game of the year in front of all their fans who have been supporting them through a very disappointing season.:p: I'll be hobnobbing with folks at Redsfest this weekend....do you really think I care that much if my pick is right or not??! What a shootout between Illinois-Fresno State. And the final play by Fresno, on a 2 pt conversion to win it - a last ditch, just wing the ball into the heavens to avoid the QB sack, where it bounces off players lunging for it like piranha going after a sheep, and it ends up in the hands of a LINEMAN for the score. Simply wild!

Congratulations to kaldaniels for winning the BIG TEN, and to Revering4Blue for winning GAC's PICK'S.

The battle for the BIG TEN came down to the final week, just like some of yesterday's games came down to the final wire. If it wasn't for that laughable "hail mary" toss by Fresno State at the very end of the game, to win by 1 pt, kal and Heather would still be tied.

But hey! That's football.

As soon as they post the Bowl schedule/matchups I will post it ON THIS THREAD. I'm not going to start a new thread.

A lot was riding on that 2-pt conversion. All I can say is I am glad I scouted the recieving abilities of the Fresno (who was the underdog) O-line and I took that into account with my selection. :D

Thanks again for the contest GAC, I have no business winning this contest and in truthfulness I've been clinging to a lead given to me by a hot start...you and Heather and Springfields all were nipping at my heels here lately and if the season were 1 week longer one of you would have caught me.

I'm working on the Bowl schedule. But the website I am using, which I referenced earlier, hasn't put the line/point spreads up for a majority of the games. Don't know what they are waiting on. I guess I need to be more patient.

Does anyone know of another source that may already have them posted that I can use?

The first game is the 19th, and I'd like to get the schedule up a week in advance.

This is via Rivals and Yahoo. They list a few different sportsbooks and the margins. First one is the Army/Navy game then all the bowls after that.

I've got the Bowl schedule done; but have to wait till after the Army-Navy game this Saturday to determine who will be in the EagleBank Bowl.

If, by chance, Army can pull off the upset (they are 14 pt underdogs), then they, not UCLA, will go to the bowl game.

Here is the site I am utilizing to acquire the line on each bowl game. It's the one Danny Serafini recommended last week....

I pick Rutgers in case I don't get the rest done before that one starts.

I know about wishing in hindsight. Too much about it. I wish I had not gone with mostly underdogs, ignoring my thoughts that Rutgers was better, I would be 2-0 and quite a shock, considering we are using point spreads, which can have just about any outcome under the star's that are possible.

I wanted to see what would happen when, for the most part picking teams away from the ones with minus points, I guess we will find out.

Well, I've recovered a little bit over the last few days. I now stand at 2-4.

How in the heck could Nevada be such a huge favorite, giving SMU 14.5 pts (one odds maker was giving them 21), and then get blown out like they did? Geez!

If I recall correctly, Nevada had two of their main rushers out of the game for various reasons. It was pretty much up to the QB to carry the team, and clearly he didn't succeed. Not to mention that the D is horrible.

This was the same Nevada team that was rolled earlier in the season by Notre Dame 38-0 I believe. So it really was a tale of two seasons for the Wolfpack.

Only about 23,000 cared to show up in DC for the EagleBank Bowl. Of course it was played in a rickety old stadium (RFK) and the wind chill was in the teens. I live in the DC area and this is not a place to have a bowl game in late December. You will almost always have some type of poor weather at that time of year.

Alright, here are the standings heading into today's big games.

The pt spread on the Oklahoma-Stanford game got a few. And only one person picked AF and Iowa State (Spring~Fields), which is why he vaulted into 1st place going into today's games.

But ChipR is probably very proud right now his Iowa State team won. I'm pretty sure he and some buds were at that game. I think they were handing out NoDoz at the gate after the game. :p:

With only 4 games left I have to be perfect in order to just attain .500.

I've learned a lot about point spreads from doing this little exercise for the bowl games....... I'm not good at it. I may have been able to do better if I hadn't been so lazy, simply went with the odds makers (pt spreads) on a majority of them, and actually did my "home work", but who knows?

I might go back, after it's all done, and see how much of a difference the standings/records would be in comparison if just picking the winner.

Shoot I expect to miss the next four games. Picking spreads, and trying to guess scores, especially for 34 games is tough. Well we see that we each missed several of them no matter how we made our choices.

Other than the heavy favorites with the large point spreads, how is one to guess what the score might be in any game? I think one has to be very selective and only pick one here and there, and not every game to get a high percentage right, if then. We are not picking teams, we are picking spreads, how do we do that? Not very well.

Good thing Heather opted out and gave us a break or we would really make RedsZone news. :)

Which is why places like Vegas and Atlantic City are very prosperous. The odds are there will be more losers then winners. :p:

I don't know if playing the point spreads makes it more competitive, or just simply shows that some are luckier then others. ;)

I guarantee that I would have done lousy at this whole spread thing and I'm very glad I just sat back and watched everything. :p: Maybe I'll be better prepared to play next season but I sure hope this whole picking the spread thing doesn't come up in next year's Big Ten Prediction game, LOL

And there sure have been some fun bowl games this year. It's been great to see teams stepping up and playing really well. :beerme:

Actually if the odds makers do their jobs, there will be an equal number of winners and losers. Than Vegas gets a little action ya know for introducing winners to losers.

I like the goal or thought behind making the picking more interesting and challenging. That was the primary thought to start with, besides a test run needed to be done to work through to achieving that.

I am not so sure about the part where people really do have the right team but because of one or two points they are counted as having missed that one. When none of us know what the scores will be, those can be anything, in a friendly picking contest? I don't know about that.

But as far as the ones that I got right, I know there is no way, knowlege, luck or otherwise that I could consider several of those. They just happened to be the end score, some by less than a field goal. Had nothing to do with me. So I don't know about challenging and interesting in cases like that.

If you continue to have this maybe you should consider your own spreads, and something like at least 6 points, and 12 pts for the heavy favorites, I am not sure what that would do, but my thought would be to give the people a bit of a gap so they don't miss the teams that they had right by just one or two points.

It did not work to pick them the way I did either, it was silly to ignore some of the better teams and to go with the under dogs, especially like games with Florida and Cincy, of course that was more of a "hope" pick for their fans, and the rest of Ohio, that worked out well, didn't it.

Oh you would have done just fine and I am not just saying that. I especially love the part where GAC ends up a spot or two behind you.

I like to imagine, that it keeps him scratching his head, as he frantically devises methods to interpret those stats to pick teams to catch up with you, in his best Einstein hair piece .........It makes it more fun. LOL

Should have/could have been better. But what impressed me as that the Big 4 this year all won their bowl games. OSU, Iowa, PSU, and Wisconsin all won and all looked impressive.

The Big 10 is also the first conference to beat 4 Top 15 teams since 1994 when the Big 10 accomplished the same thing. Pretty impressive for a big slow conference.

What's funny is that nobody gave those 4 teams any chance of winning because of the "speed" of the opposing teams.

Yeah. The Northwestern game was a bummer. But what else were they to do down there when their kicker got hurt? Bad break there. And Iowa State beats Minnesota by 1.

So tonight is the finally. I am looking forward to a very good game between two very good teams for the National Championship. It is going to be good to see how they match up and execute against one another, and especially the outcome.

Here's the final Bowl standings folks.

Congrats to Spring~Fields!

Everyone, but SF, got burned on the Central Michigan-Troy game because of point spread.
