Please post comments about the game here today.

Good looking opening drive by the Bengals. Coles with his first TD after three drops last week. Benson running well so far.

7-7 as the Pack marches back. Rodgers to Driver from three yds out.

KoryMac5

After a Palmer INT, Grant runs it in from 4 yds out 14-7 Pack.

Bengals marching down the filed again. Benson looking good so far today.

09-20-2009, 01:42 PM
The INT was all around stupid. Palmer made a mistake, but they never should have been passing there to begin with. The o line is dominating on running plays and Benson is running very well. Ride that puppy, Brat.

KoryMac5

Bengals drive stalls after 2 penalties set them back. Bengals punt. 14-7 Pack in 2nd QTR.

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 01:52 PM
Bengals D holds on 3rd and 2 Pack punts. Should get good field position here.

Nice return for the Cosby Show gets it down into the Redzone of the Pack!

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 01:56 PM
Palmer with the TD as he sneaks it in! 14-14 ball game.

GB challenging the play.

guttle11
09-20-2009, 01:58 PM
Cosby is going to return more than one punt for a TD this year I think. He looks very dangerous when the punter out kicks the coverage by just a couple of yards.

This TD has to stand up, I'd think. It looked close, but how in the world can they get a good look through all those bodies?

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 02:00 PM
Play stands not enough evidence to overturn 14-14 good game so far.

Rey Rey with the sack! Nice.

Rey Rey with the sack! Nice.

Nice shot on Rodgers as he came in off the edge unblocked.

Sloppy game so far lots of flags flying. Pack punts Bengals have it at their own 40.

Palmer sacked on first down. RUN THE BALL! It's working.

guttle11
09-20-2009, 02:10 PM
Woodson gets a pick six.

Run the friggin ball already. For crying out loud.

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 02:11 PM
Pick 6 for the Pack. Woodsen burned Palmer their. Carson telegraphed that one.

21-14 GB lead swings momentum back to the Pack.

guttle11
09-20-2009, 02:12 PM
I fail to see what is so complicated about running the football when it's working tremendously. Two times they've started a drive by throwing, two picks leading directly to 2 TDs. Two drives lead by running the ball, two TDs for the offense. Maybe I'm just stupid.

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 02:18 PM
Definitely should have run the ball on the play Palmer got sacked. Keep pounding it on first down.

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 02:21 PM
3rd and 29 for the Bengals. Story of our lives.

3rd and 34 now after a delay of game.

guttle11
09-20-2009, 02:23 PM
Good job Daniel Coats! Fumbles the ball forward and Coles gets it, allowing the Bengals to pick up a 3rd and 34.

Wow.

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 02:23 PM
Believe it or not Coats picked up the first down on a TE screen.

Trickeration! Flea flicker and a roughing penalty make it first and goal!

Unreal.

Bengals at the 5 yd line after a flea flicker to OchoCinco and a penalty.

Sometimes I really feel like we are watching the overall implosion of Carson Palmer. Some of the decisions made in this game really baffle me.

Then a turn of luck on the fumble recovery and a flea flicker and the Bengals are in scoring position.

I'm starting to wonder why Bratkowski still has a job.

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 02:31 PM
21-21 game as Palmer finds slim in the back of the endzone.

I think gaining some lbs has helped him.

guttle11

Tremendous job by the D line. Sack by Odom, then tons of pressure on Rodgers forcing a 55 yard FG out of what was looking like a TD drive.

KoryMac5
09-20-2009, 02:39 PM
Pack trying for a 55 yd FG. Cosby has a big leg.

NO GOOD! Score remains 21-21

guttle11
09-20-2009, 02:40 PM

21-21 at half. That feels like a moral victory. We get the ball after half.

Playadlc
09-20-2009, 02:48 PM
It's critical for us to win the turnover battle in the 2nd half. Being -2 and having the score tied at half is huge. Getting the ball to start the half is nice.

KoryMac5

Bengals need to stop the sloppy play, turnovers and penalties.

If the Bengals continue to get this kind of production from the running game, and pressure from the defense, this team really does have a chance to be real, real good this year. Even despite the fluke loss last week (and the offense didn't really do much for three quarters), I was still somewhat impressed with certain facets of the team. I really would like to see this team pull this game out. It could mean a lot.

Still need to clean up the penalties and turnovers so you don't have to play in a close game like they did.

The defense played good again and only gave up 10 of those 24 points the Packers had.

This seems to be the most talented team they have had since the playoff year. The Oline was my primary concern between another mediocre year and a playoff run and they have been holding their own. I just love this front 7, not just the starters, but the depth, a rare commodity for the Bengals.

That was a good Packers team that a lot of people picked for the Super Bowl and the Bengals just handled them. When you consider that Palmer made some uncharacteristic mistakes and the number of Bengals penalties this could have been a blow out for the Bengals.

I'm cautiously excited about the rest of the year. Pittsburgh should provide a measuring stick for where this team is. Can Benson get his yards against that D?

One other thing, barring injury this is a team that should get better as the year goes on. The offensive line will begin to gel, Andre Smith will work his way into the rotation, and Palmer should shake off the rust and begin to click with Coles.

Andre Caldwell seems to be having other ideas on Coles. Though I fully expect Laverneous to get things going at some point, I really like the Ochocinco-Henry-Caldwell trio right now.

If the running game keeps clicking like this, the Bengals have a chance to do things.

Funny you should ask, I was just reading Lance's blog and come across this:

Updating: Bengals and Reds win on same day
Stat of the day from listener Wally
How rare is it for the Reds and Bengals to win on the same day?
According to Wally it has happened just 12 times since 1990.
5 times with preseason win for Bengals and regular season win for Reds
8/20 2009, 8/13 2006, 8/19 2005, 8/9 2002, 8/19 2000
7 times with a regular season win for Reds and Bengals

Its evident how Palmer is shaking off the rust through the first 2 games of the season. He was poor last week, and made two awful throws, as well as being on a different page with Chad open deep. He shows why he is a good QB, but he is still shaking off the rust.

I really like this defense. The DLine is the best I have seen in my lifetime. They are getting pressure on the QB and knocking the QB down. It shouldn't hurt the D that Palmer had a pick 6 and a pick that was taken back to the 5 yard line. Their weakness is the 3rd CB spot and I wouldn't be surprised if they pick up a 3rd QB soon. I like Crocker and Williams, but they have no business covering slot receivers.

Its nice to have a punter who can actually punt.

Ray Maualuga is the first defensive difference maker the Bengals have had in a while. As the season goes along he will become a beast.

Let's see if they actually make the playoffs first (which I'm not counting on, though I do agree this year's team is more talented than the past few years, but I still don't care for the offensive line). If they do make the playoffs this year and if you're asking whether Mike Brown deserves credit for a whopping two playoff appearances in 18 years as the "de facto GM", absolutely not in my book. In a league built on parity, that speaks for itself, as far as I'm concerned.

After Marvin, clearing all of the debris for "character issues" and the like, there has been some level of competence attained. This year's team has a lot of new personnel on D making a difference and the offense is healthy and full of tools. Parity didn't do much for the before Marvin era, BTW.

Honestly, I think Mikey is making better personnel decisions, and that although he may ultimately be "in charge," that he has and is listening to folks who actually know what an NFL talent looks like.

And my comment is only directed at the clear upgrade in talent that is dramatically evident, esp. on D. Not printing playoff tickets yet, just happy that a solid NFL roster has been put together again this season.

Maybe so, but I don't think the decade+ prior to Marvin's hire should be ignored - he was the person ultimately responsible for hiring and firing the previous head coaches (Shula, Coslet and LeBeau). Even with Marvin coming aboard, it's not as if they're turned into some sort of power house; they're made one playoff appearance in his six full seasons and have a losing record overall. I understand that it's been much more like NFL-caliber football since he took over, but compared to the previous regimes, that's not saying much.

Respectfully, I disagree with you that parity didn't exist prior to around the time Marvin took over in 2003. The NFL has always promoted it, but particularly with the salary cap and losing teams getting higher draft picks, there's no reason a team should have the record of futility that the Bengals have accumulated under Mike Brown's watch.

For the reason you mentioned above: while the way the organization does business still leaves a ton to be desired, Marvin Lewis is a clear upgrade over his three predecessors. I do believe that Brown seeks input from his coaches on personnel decisions, but therein lies the problem: I believe coaches should coach, not also have scouting responsibilities.

I'd be shocked if there was a team in the league that didn't involve the coaches in personnel decisions. Ultimately, they have to coach the player so they should have a say in personnel. It only becomes an issue with some of the coach/gm combos that do it all, a la Mike Shanahan.

I think slowly Mike Brown has been finding the right coaches to run this team. Marvin Lewis did a lot to change the attitude and inherited a solid offense to make his first playoff run. Unfortunately, they had to deal with some turnover on offense without a corresponding boost in the D. However, I think they've finally got the talent and, most importantly the coach in Mike Zimmer who can turn what has traditionally been the Bengals' weakness into their strength. While I'm not ready to crown them playoff hopefuls yet, I like what I see. Man it's good to see a Bengals front seven play like they have so far.

I'm with you on scouting. I'm fine with coaches doing some scouting outside the season, but during the season, you need scouts watching players play on the field while your coaches are coaching.

This team is only 2-0 right now. They have a long way to go to convince me that they are a winner and while I remain upbeat about what they have done to improve their ability to move the line in the correct direction, I still a team that is capable of beating itself soundly.

Luckily, the Steelers defense is looking a little less imposing without Polamalu.

Which team are you talking about? Both the Steelers and Bengals are currently 1-1.

I'd be shocked if there was a team in the league that didn't involve the coaches in personnel decisions. Ultimately, they have to coach the player so they should have a say in personnel. It only becomes an issue with some of the coach/gm combos that do it all, a la Mike Shanahan.
Respectfully, I'd be shocked to hear of a team whose coaches are as active in a team's scouting process as the Bengals'. I agree with you that coaches on all teams have some input on personnel decisions, but I remember reading an interview with Ozzie Newsome where he was asked if he could imagine the Ravens employing a system like the Bengals and his response was essentially 'No way - coaches don't have time to do that. That's why we employ our scouts and front office personnel.' There's a reason this team has so few full time scouts relative to the rest of the league: it's because the coaches essentially double as scouts.

Mike Brown is a blind squirrel, and we all know what they say about blind squirrels. He is running in circles in a forest full of competent GMs. Yes, he will find his nut once every 8-10 years, but meanwhile, the others are finding theirs on a regular basis.

Playoffs or not in 2009, Mike Brown still needs to go.

Sticking with the squirrel metaphor- I still have a feeling Mike couldn't find his nuts even with full sight.

The Packers game was fun. I'm not really going to bother looking from week to week anymore, I like football enough to where I'm going to keep watching, and I actually think this Bengals team is probably the best or second best that Marvin's had, but I just am trying very hard not to get my hopes up anymore.

The Bengals make me feel like Charlie Brown with Mike Brown as Lucy, always yanking away the football.
