Sad. I pray for little Johan, Alex and the rest of the Gonzalez family.

I feel awful for him. I was critical of him as a player, but baseball just isn't important.

The guy always had a free pass from me as a Red. I have 4 sons....and just. can't. imagine. what that would be like to try and work through.

Frankly, I don't see how Alex even plays with his son in that condition.

I wondered that too, but it may be why he plays, too. That's gota be expensive and insurance can run out. I wonder if he has any other kids to care for. He may also be taking care of family back home, too.

I think Alex has enough money for it all. I would bet his main reason for playing would be to get a bit of a break from it all.

Pretty sad.My son turned 3 about a month ago and I can't imagine how I'd deal with him having those kind of problems at that age.Stories like this make you appreciate things you sometimes take for granted.I hope to hear that Johan is doing better someday.

Wow.

Yet another reminder that baseball really is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

I don't know, that's a lot of money, especially with no insurance. Just curious, is there some threshold as far as years where a baseball player will be guaranteed insurance for the rest of his life? Sort of like with his pension.(I think that one is 6 years.)

After having a child go through a life threatening illness after birth, I sympathize with AGON. While my daughter eventually got better, I do know a little bit of what he is going through. For the first week, you really can't do anything but sit by the child's bed and hope and pray. Getting back to work for a few days here and there helped me, until she got better. I will now do what so many kind people did for my family during our toughest time, and pray for AGON.

I thought that was interesting that Wayne didn't even know the extent of Johann's condition until the reporter told him.
