Maybe this is what Dusty and Walt have always been looking at and why they don't care if the first two batters walk or not.

But, the 1990 REDS were First in Batting Average, 1st in HBP, Second in Sacrifice Hits, 3rd in Total Bases, 3rd in Slugging Percentage. They were also First in BAbip and 3rd in Runs Created.

So, they had the Offense.

What made them so powerful was they also had the Pitching and the Defense as they led the League in Fielding percentage and the Pitching led the League in Runs scored per game.

Anyone who knew anything about Cincinnati knew the REDS would win the series.

Howard Cosell also knew the Reds would win. He actually predicted the 4 game CINCINNATI sweep cause of the pitching.

I knew we were gonna win because of Jack Roidstrong.

Oh, and someone named Jose Rijo.

Tony Larussa's the most overrated manager IMO, because that Oakland team was so loaded they should have won multiple Championships. The only reason they won their one, was because an earthquake allowed him to pitch Dave Stewart 3 times.

being 1st in SB% makes up for the lack of walks

Being 3rd in mlb in era probably had a lot to do with them winning. Just a hunch.

What was their OBP ranking? Being first in BA probably kept them pretty well in OBP huh?

They were 4th in the NL (12 teams). League average was .321. They were .325.

So, kinda invalidates your attempted point eh?

OBP/OPS are important.

NOT making outs is important.

I don't think anyone is saying re-emphasize walks, they are saying re-emphasize Getting on Base.

It's a very simple game.

Get more Total Bases (including Walks and any other way one can reach base) than your opponent and you'll win more games.

Prevent your opponent from getting more Total Bases than you and you'll win more games.
