Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 2-16-10. Marty said we are less than 2 days away from Pitchers and catchers reporting (Yay!) Thom said this is a very exciting time and people are eagerly anticipating the upcoming season. Marty said that people really started to get excited after they signed Cabrera. He still holds out hope the Reds can sign Gomes which would go a long way to filling half of a LF platoon. Marty said that every team is holding out hope but said you can never count on anything. He cited the example of ATL pitcher Jurgens experiencing shoulder soreness and going in for a scan on Wednesday. He said Jurgens is a real stud on that staff and you think the worse when you hear of a pitcher having shoulder or arm soreness. Thom said that a lot people roll their eyes when people in the media say how important health is but that’s a good example. He said that if anyone’s #1 starter goes down, that team is in trouble. Marty posed the question about one guy that comes out of nowhere and becomes a major player on the team. (McDonald?) Thom said that there are not many guys that could come out of nowhere since we are familiar with most of the younger players but if he had to pick one, it would be Mike Leake. Marty said that a guy like Josh Anderson may be the dark horse candidate or else it could be Leake. He also said that Leake out pitched Strasburg in the AFL. Marty said that Chapman will be given every opportunity to be the 5th starter and Leake will probably start in AA. Thom said that during the games in ST, it will be a lot of fun to watch some of the younger players play once the starters leave.

The first caller said he hopes the Reds re-sign Gomez (sic) He asked if Hanigan still doesn’t hit well, where is his position going to be with the team. He also asked if Yonder is being converted to catcher and what Marty thinks about it and what other player has been converted to catcher. Marty and Thom said they don’t think Yonder to catcher will happen. Thom said he’d like to see what Yonder does with a full season. Marty thinks at the end of the day either Votto or Yonder will be traded. Marty said Hanigan is a defensive specialist but he didn’t help himself when Razor Ramon went down since he didn’t drive in runs. Marty said he’s a backup catcher and a backup catcher’s primary job is defense which he is a solid one. Thom said he’s a good hitter and that’s why it was disappointing he wasn’t able to drive in runs. He does think Hanigan will play more this year to keep Razor Ramon fresh.

After commercial, the next caller asked who will lead off and something about Willy T getting released and signed by the Nats. Marty said he heard the A’s wanted Rosales so bad they were willing to take on Willy’s salary as long as someone else took on Miles’ salary. He said that the salary relief helped the Reds sign Cabrera. Thom said that Stubbs is going to be the leadoff hitter coming into ST.

The next caller said he hasn’t been as excited about the prospects coming in since the mid 80s. The caller also asked how the Reds view Vlad. Thom said Walt talked about him on the caravan as much as he did any player. He said that they are very high on him but he is out of options. He said that Walt believes that Vlad has a chance to be a great player. Marty said he went back and forth on him last year. He said Vlad has to prove it to him during ST. Thom said that he’s going to get a chance during ST and no one’s hoping for Gomes not to sign more than Vlad.

The next caller asked how the players get ready for Opening Day from their last games in ST. Thom said he makes a good point. He said he’s surprised the Reds are playing a game on Saturday this year with Opening Day on Monday. He said they will get into Cincy very late/early and then have a workout on Sunday. Thom said it isn’t as bad going west to east than the other way around. The caller asked if they could have the minor leaguers play in the last game and have everyone else go back early. Marty said that they have a charter flight after the game and everyone is on it. The caller asked if StL trains in FLA or AZ. Thom said they train in FLA. The caller said that puts the Reds behind the 8 ball a bit. Thom said he hasn’t looked at StL’s schedule and they might be playing some exhibition games against some farm teams and that might defeat the purpose. The caller asked about Jim Kelch’s broadcasting schedule. Thom said he’ll do about 50 some games. Marty said that’s as much as he’s ever done as a fill in and no one is happier about Kelch joining the broadcast team than Thom and him. Marty said he’s a big believer of rewarding people with talent who have paid their dues and Kelch is one of those guys.

Thus endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 2-16-10. So let it be written. So let it be done.

Do you mean to tell me that in some 50-odd "RISP" chances while hitting in front of the pitcher Hanigan didn't accumulate a ton of "RBI?"

Cut him.

It seems the stats that Marty values most for hitters are BA-HR-RBI, for pitchers it begins and ends with W-L record.

Sacrifice Flies and singles with runners in scoring position often seem to be more important to him than than HRs.

Huh, the guy who excels on getting on base but can't hit for power didn't drive in any runs? Go figure. God forbid we put players in a position which actually utilizes their skills and judge the accordingly...

I'm clearly losing patience for stupidity. I've honestly lost all interest in watching baseball games with the sound on...

I'm the same way. I just listen to music, or I go out to the bar and watch.
