Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 2-23-10. John Fay called in from AZ to begin the show. Marty asked him what his general impression of what heís seen so far. Fay said that today was the first full squad workout And he thinks that the addition of Cabrera and Miles, getting rid of Willy T and also re-signing Gomes the team has more confidence in . He said there is some good pitching in camp and was impressed by del Rosario. Marty asked him if he thought Chapman would be the 5th starter. Fay said heís got to have a good spring. Heís seen him throw 2 bullpen sessions and heís not wild and throws strikes. He said there isnít a lot of competition for that 5th spot. He said if heís ready, he thinks the Reds will bring him up. He thinks the Reds have nothing to lose by having him be the 5th starter. Marty asked if Chapman has to pitch himself to the minor leagues. Fay agreed and said everyone you talk to have been surprised by his command. Fay said that heís very willing to take instruction and compared his situation to Cueto when he made the team 3 years ago. Marty said that now that Gomes has been re-signed they donít have a lot of spots open. Fay said that Dickerson would probably platoon with Gomes and they will look at Frazier and Heisey and Francisco. Marty said that even though Stubbs is the incumbent in CF, he is going to have to show that he can continue to do what he did when he came up. Fay said that Dusty said that Stubbs still have to prove himself. He said Dickerson can play CF too and adding Gomes can give them more options. He said there are a lot of questions on the club but the IF and the bullpen and the catching is solid. Marty asked Fay how he liked the new complex. Fay said itís incredible for what they are doing and trying to do with it. He said they had some rain but the position players hadnít reported yet so they still got things done. He said they have a video facility and clubhouse on par with a lot of major league clubhouses.

After commercial, the first caller asked Marty where the Reds have strengthened themselves and what they need to do to strengthen themselves. Marty said they did a lot of things to strengthen themselves. They signed Cabrera, re-signed Gomes and Razor Ramon. He thinks this is a much better team that finished 2009 and Marty is very enthusiastic about 2010 and thinks a winning season is realistic.

The next caller said with all the moves the Reds have made it has increased hope. He wanted to know if Dustyís on the hot seat because of the higher expectations. Marty feels hot seat is too strong a term. He said injury has to be taken into account and they canít get people injured like last year.

The next caller asked if Gomesí signing means Heisey goes to LOU. Marty thinks Heisey, Francisco and Frazier will get the longest look among the young players. The Reds donít want Heisey to sit on the bench in the majors and thinks he needs to prove he can play in AAA.

The next caller wanted to know how many wins the Reds would have. Marty said 85-86 if healthy. He thinks the pitching is a strong suit and the only spot thatís open is the 5th starter.

After commercial, the next caller agreed that the Reds need to stay healthy but if Phillips gets hurt, who plays 2nd. Marty said Miles can play 2nd or they could play Frazier there. The caller said the Reds deserve kudos for re-signing Gomes. Marty agreed and said the RH platoon in LF is taken care of.

The next caller asked what the rotation order would be and who would be the 5th starter. Marty said nothing is set in stone. He said Harang has been the guy for Opening Day in the past but he has to earn it this year. He said Bronsonís comments the other day were interesting when he said that he didnít want to pitch with all the hoopla surrounding Opening Day. Marty said if he has a great spring, heíll be the Opening Day starter whether he likes it or not. He said Homer and Cueto would be the 3rd and 4th starters and Chapman, Maloney, Lehr, Lincoln, Wood et al. will be the candidates for the 5th starterĎs role.

The next caller is concerned about Jay Bruce. Marty said he was great after he came off the DL and he was more patient with breaking balls outside the strike zone. He hit over .300 and thinks heíll have a breakout year in 2010. The caller asked if he is the most important player this year. Marty said as far as offense goes he is. Marty said that if he hadnít been hurt, he was on a pace to hit between 35-40 HRs even though he didnĎt hit very well.

After commercial, the next caller asked if Chapman pitches well in the spring, what are his chances of making the team. Marty said they will open with 5 starters since they only have 2 off days through the 19th. The caller asked Marty what he thought of him throwing over 100 mph and if he had good velocity. (Iíve heard some really stupid stuff on this show but that one takes the cake.) Marty asked him what he thinks 100 mph is. The caller said, ďGood velocity.Ē Marty said he doesnít throw every pitch 100 mph but is in the 90s an awful lot.

The next caller asked how Juan Encarnacion is doing. Marty said his careerís over with. He doesnít have full vision in the eye he was struck in. Marty said that was a tragedy especially for someone who was a productive player.

The next caller asked if the Reds would send Harang down if he didnít pitch well (Groan). Marty said they canít send him down anymore end even if he has options heís been in the big leagues so long he couldnít go down without his consent. He said he Reds are going to hang with him and Price is encouraged that he can return to 06-07 form. Marty said they have to count on the veteran guys and Cueto has to have a good year. This is his 3rd year and he has to be more consistent.

After commercial, the next caller asked about Chapmanís offspeed stuff. Marty said Soto is working with him on the changeup. He said his fastball is so devastating, if he can get the changeup over, itíll make his fastball look much better and heíll be difficult to beat.

The next caller asked if the Reds will carry a 3rd catcher. Marty said they wonít to begin the season. He said they will carry 12 pitchers and with LOU just down the road, they can get a catcher up pretty quick.

The next caller said that Marty sounds very enthusiastic about the upcoming season. Marty said when they signed Cabrera, that really made him a believer.

Thus endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 2-23-10. So let it be written. So let it be done.

That was downright hilarious. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when I heard that question.

Thanks Chip.

if Chapman pitches so well that the Reds start him in the bigs then the team will win a lot more than 85-86 games. the position players may not all be stars but there isn't a hole anywhere in the starting 8. the pen is deep. if the starters go 5 deep from opening day we'll have a great year.

Years ago I listened to Jim Rome's AM radio show here in Columbus. My favorite part of the show was when a caller would say something or ask a question that was stupid.Jim would cut them off by sounding a loud annoying buzzer. This usually would happen mid sentence and usually not followed by an answer or comment to whatever garbage was coming out of the callers mouth. The timing of the buzz was usually perfect, then the show simply moved on.It would be fantastic if Hot Stove would add this feature.

"Do you think the Reds will send Harang down ifBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!

I'm out

Ok, So Chapman can bring it at 100 mph, but does he have any velocity?
