I was in PHX from Feb. 23 -28. You may be surprised at how "desolate" it seems in the part of Goodyear near the park. Just seemed strange to me how there wasn't much around the ballpark. No retail stores, no food joints, etc.

You'll see lots of Air Force jets... a base not far from there. And a pretty cool Wildlife Sanctuary (zoo w/out cages if you will) about 6 miles from the Goodyear Ballpark too if your son needs a side trip.

Watch for those photo enforcement cameras on the highways! Do not do more than 10 mph over the limit. :D

Going with my son out to Goodyear March 8-12. We plan to see two Reds games (vs. Diamondbacks and Dodgers), and also venture off to a Mariners-Rangers game, as he's hankering to see Ichiro play.

I looked at some photos on Google maps -- yeah, the park is right in the middle of the desert.

Where are the closest eating/drinking establishments? Anything within a mile?

Spring Training guide from C. Trent:

Welcome to Arizona
By C. Trent Rosecrans on February 28, 2010 1:12 PM

Welcome to the Cactus League, a baseball fan's dream.

Seriously, I heard all the bellyaching when the Reds announced they were moving here. Well, get over it. If you're doing a spring training trip, the Cactus League is amazing. Sure, there's no beach, but that only means your missing out on old dudes in Speedos and granny in her one-peice. I don't think we're missing out.

So, what's there to do out here? Well, there's baseball, and lots of it.

First off, you're going to need a car, there's no way around it. Everything is spread out -- but it's not that spread out. It's so spread out you'll need a car, but not so spread out that all you do is drive. A tip on the car, it may be cheaper to get a cab at the airport and rent from an off-site car rental place. The taxes on car rentals at the airport are insane.

One of the biggest complaints I heard about Goodyear -- mostly from columnists who'd never actually been here -- was that it's "in the middle of nowhere." The ballpark here is 25 minutes from downtown Phoenix -- it took me that long to drive from my condo on Siesta Key to Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, so it's not like it's a big deal.

You can stay in Goodyear or its neighboring* town of Avondale, or you can stay in Phoenix or Glendale, home of the Cardinals and Coyotes.

Glendale's also the home of the White Sox and Dodgers. The Royals and Rangers are up the road in Surprise, the Brewers are east in Maryvale, the Mariners and Padres are up north in Peoria -- all of those are about a half-hour away.

The Cubs are in Mesa, the A's are in Phoenix, the Giants are in Scottsdale and the Angeles are in Tempe, all of those are around 45-minutes to an hour away, depending on traffic. The Diamondbacks and Rockies are in Tucson, which is a bit of a haul.

That, in a nutshell, is the biggest difference (besides beaches) between the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues, there were much longer trips between games in Florida. Here, they're all close. And if you just want to stay in town, if the Reds are away, the Indians are here. It's a really amazing set-up.

If you want some hockey, the Coyotes have home games March 2 (St. Louis), March 4 (Colorado), March 6 (Anaheim), March 10 (Vancouver), March 20 (Chicago) and March 27 (Colorado).

If you have your car and want to do more driving, there are some gorgeous mountain drives within two hours and Vegas is a five-hour drive if you're out for some gambling. Or you could stay closer and there are several casinos in the area.

A reminder, Arizona is on Mountain Standard Time (two hours behind Cincinnati) until March 13. Arizona doesn't go for the whole Daylight Savings Time, so from March 14 on, it's three hours behind Cincinnati.

ABOUT THE BALLPARK
The Ballpark is seperate from the Reds complex. The two are about 3/4 of a mile apart, with the Indians' complex between.

That airport you see in the background? It's mostly a an airport graveyard. The planes are dismantled and their parts are recycled.

I'll update this part with the day-to-day schedule when the games start and I figure it all out. But before the games start, the practices at the complex are open to the public and there are places to get autographs as the players switch between the four fields in the cloverleaf on the south end of the complex. Before the games, workouts begin somewhere around 10 a.m. and end around noon.

The ballpark is not near any real establishments. In order to get to any businesses, you'll need to go across to north the I-10 Freeway - which is several miles away. There is a stark contrast of difference between the development on the north side of the 10 and the south.

All that's south of the I-10 there is the Ballpark, the Training Complex, the Youth fields next door, and the Boneyard up the street (which is visible from the park)

You could fly to Vegas if your time is limited or if you don't want to drive 5 hours. That's 10 hours roundtrip. And the last time I was on that road, there was tons of road construciton going on.

So who's going this year? I'll be making the trip with a couple of buddies, most likely either March 2-6 or 23-27. Which of these two times would you recommend, or is there any difference? I assume it will be less crowded early, but also fewer major leaguers.

Any updates on places to stay, eating/drinking establishments would be welcome too. We'll probably spread out and see games at a few different ballparks.

I thought I'd revive this thread to see if anyone is interested in a get together in Goodyear? I know a few of us will be there the weekend of the 11-13. Is anyone interested in meeting up at a game or for a beer before/after?
